The specialist team will create a choice board each week with new activities! These are all optional activities, but we encourage you to take some time each week and try something new! We will post a link to the choice boards on the Salem Elementary Remote Resources Google Site.

K-2 Choices: Keyboard Zoo & Build a Bird Nest
Online Choice | It’s never too early to start learning where all of the keys on a keyboard are located! It is important to learn how to type so that you can be more comfortable on a computer and get your work done faster! Click the monkey to play a typing game called, “Keyboard Zoo.” If you want an extra challenge, try typing some of your sight words on a Google Doc!
Offline Choice | In this project you will try to build your own bird nest using only natural materials that you can find outside. Can you build a better nest than a bird? Materials:
HINT: You might find that building a bird nest can be surprisingly difficult! If you just made a pile of dry materials like sticks or grass, your nest probably didn't stay together very well. It might fall apart if you blow on it or try to pick it up. You can make your nest much sturdier by weaving the materials together to form a basket, or using a binding material like mud as "glue" to hold the pieces together. |

3-5 Choices: Typing Practice & Caine’s Arcade!
Online Choice | The productivity of a business depends on how quickly things can be completed! To complete your work faster it is important to develop typing skills. Typing helps you to work comfortably on the computer, it aids in communicating with colleagues and customers, creating documents, and finding new information. Practice your typing skills by clicking one of the buttons below!
Offline Choice | Step 1: 9-year-old Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. The entire summer went by, and he never had a single customer. But Caine didn’t give up. Then, on the last day of summer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick walked in by chance to buy an auto part for his car. Caine asked Nirvan to play, and, well, watch Caine’s Arcade and Caine’s Arcade 2 to see what happened next… Step 2: Think about the types of arcade games that you have played. Some examples might include: ski-ball, air hockey, a claw machine, a crane, basketball, pinball, and ring toss. Check out the pictures on the next slides to get inspired! You don’t need to recreate one of these games, feel free to create a NEW game! Sketch a picture of your game and label your drawing with the types of materials that you will use. Step 3: Gather your materials and start building your arcade game! |

K-2 Choices |
Object Carry Challenge Create a start and finish line roughly 10 steps apart. Students will take an object of their choice and place it on their back. They will then place their hands and feet on the ground at the same time (bear crawl position). The goal is to make it to the finish line and back to the start line without dropping the object. You can make this a timed activity or you can adjust the activities difficulty by changing the size of the object. In addition you can change objects midway through your challenge to make it more difficult (take object off your back and put new one on all in bear crawl position). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXEuj29KcOY&t=138s At Home Bocce Ball Bocce can be played indoors or outdoors. You need a target to toss at ( a small item-ball,cone, sock, etc). You will then need 1 to 2 items to toss/roll per contestant (best items for bocce balls are anything that can be tossed and rolled- socks balled up, shirts balled up, plastic bags tied up together). Find different courses and different distances. Remember points are awarded for closest to the small object. Do not be afraid to get practice in creatively if you are on your own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJV-nWmrIqc |

3-5 Choices |
Home Object Fitness Students can pick the item of their choice (filled water bottles, filled gallon jugs, a backpack filled with books, cans of food) Students perform the exercises slow and under control to get the movement down. Perform each activity to the best of your ability. Bonus- see if you can identify muscles on your body after you complete the entire round of exercises (i.e. where is the bicep). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORhVNFqb6I0 Toilet Paper Juggling Use a roll of toilet paper or socks balled up together. Students focus on foot eye coordination by keeping the object in the air without letting it hit the floor. Watch the video and notice how Messi was keeping his foot tight (not moving) and hitting it off the surface that was the biggest area on his foot. Start with a small number and catch it. Work right foot and left foot and build your number up! |
