Making an Appointment With Your Counselor

  • In front office you will find a computer towards the right, you fill out the Google form to request an appointment or request to see us on the HMBHS website.
  • If it’s been more than 2 days and you haven’t received a call-slip, please email your counselor.

  • Common Application - https://www.commonapp.org/
    • Must MATCH your Common App with Naviance for us to send transcripts and letters of recommendation
    • MUST “Waive” your “FERPA Rights” on Common App

    • Once you are logged in to Naviance go to the 'Colleges' top tab. Then click on “Colleges I'm Applying To” and in the box “match” your common application email with your Naviance/Family Connection account. On this same screen below you will be able to add schools to your list.

Requesting Letters of Recommendation

  • Most colleges (private/out-of-state) require about 2 LORS & 1 Counselor LOR
  • Email at least 2 teachers to request (include which schools and deadlines to be submitted)
  • MUST complete the Letter of Recommendation Survey by clicking: About Me → My Surveys → Surveys Not Started
  • MUST also complete the “Resume” on Naviance

CSU Applications/Admissions

  • Application Period: October 1, 2024- November 30, 2024
  • 2.00 GPA is the minimum requirement to apply
  • The California State University (CSU) does not need the ACT/SAT scores in determining admission eligibility for all CSU campuses.
  • EOP - Educational Opportunity Program https://www2.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/eop
    • Has a history of low family income.
    • Must be enrolled on a full-time basis. (Part-time attendance requires program director’s approval.)
    • Needs admission assistance as an exception admit, OR Meets regular admission requirements but in the opinion of EOP personnel will require a full range of assistance to succeed.
    • Requires supplemental application w/ a Counselor Letter of Recommendation
  • $70 to send application per campus - FEE WAIVER Application (If approved, allows you to waive fees for up to 4 campuses) → Just Google “Cal State Fee Waiver Application”

UC Applications/Admissions

  • Application Period: August 1, 2024- November 30, 2024
  • Students will still need to achieve the minimum GPA of 3.0 (3.4 for nonresidents) with classes for which they are able to earn letter grade credit. High school A-G courses completed with a letter grade must be passed with a C- or better grade.
  • The University of California does not need the ACT/SAT test scores for admissions requirements.
  • Choose 4 of the 8 Personal Insight Questions (PIQ’s) - Example: 1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

  • We have local Community College Reps come to HMBHS early Spring Semester to help apply (Date TBD)
  • Promise Scholars Program https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/promise/
    • Full tuition and fees paid for first and second years; Up to $750 toward textbooks; Dedicated personal counseling
    • Assistance with a Student Education Plan
    • Priority enrollment; Counseling support to complete an AA/AS or certificate in 2 years
    • Exclusive events and workshops
    • $50 monthly food and transportation incentive
  • Complete your FAFSA/CADAA early (Starts in OCT)

  • The Counselors will come in during December to explain the new FAFSA process
  • 1st create your FSA ID https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm (then wait 3 days until system confirms your identity)
  • Your contributor is required to create and FSA ID
    • They also need an mailing address and email address
  • 2nd complete your FAFSA Application- https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
  • Double check your private universities/out-of-state college FAFSA Deadlines (CA deadline: March 2nd)
  • DREAM ACT - If you’re a noncitizen without a Social Security card or had one issued through the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, you should fill out the California Dream Act Application found at caldreamact.org.
  • You don’t need to fill out a FAFSA form to be eligible for California student financial aid. Contact the California Student Aid Commission (csac.ca.gov) or your financial aid administrator for more information. Additional forms might be required. Applicants are encouraged to keep a record of their submission by printing out their online FAFSA confirmation page or obtaining proof of mailing the FAFSA form.

SAT/ACT Standardized Tests - Class of 2025

  • UC’s/CSU’s - not requiring SAT/ACT test scores for applications
  • BUT Private Schools or Out-of-State Colleges could still be requiring scores so double check with each one you might be applying to for their standardized testing policies.
  • SAT (12th grade only) Fall at HMBHS - Oct. 9th 2024
    • Please see Mrs. Tower for info or questions or email her towerd@cabrillo.k12.ca.us
    • You will need to pay cash or check $70 with Mrs. Acosta, get an SAT registration form from Mrs. Tower or Mrs. Acosta.
    • Payment must be received by September 20th!
