Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Focus: Analyzing existing data to identify patterns, make predictions, and automate tasks.

Limitations: Lacks the ability to adapt to new situations or generate novel ideas.

Strengths: Good at solving well-defined problems, performing repetitive tasks, and making precise calculations and predictions.

Examples: Spam filtering, facial recognition, product recommendations, medical diagnosis, and customer service chatbots.

Traditional AI (also known as predictive AI or rule-based AI):

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

Focus: Creating new content, such as text, images, music, or code, based on patterns learned from vast datasets.

Strengths: Can generate new and creative solutions, enhance creativity and innovation, and create personalized experiences.

Examples: AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, text-to-image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion, and tools for generating code, music, or art.

Limitations: Can be computationally expensive to train and run, and may lack transparency in its decision-making processes.

🤔 How do I acknowledge Gen AI use?

Be a LASER! ⚡️

You will be asked to submit an assignment check-in describing your process and identifying any of the following uses by letter. Please keep track of which letters apply as you use AI tools. Remember the phrase, "Be a LASER," that is, be precise with the letters you list in the check-in. There is no limit to how many of these you use.

  • B = Brainstorming – Generating ideas, expanding on your own ideas, exploring different perspectives, generating outlines, and overcoming writer’s block.
  • L = Language Support – Translating from another language, finding vocabulary words, phrases, and synonyms.
  • A = Analyzing – Analyzing data, text, or patterns, helping to simplify complex ideas for better understanding.
  • S = Searching – Gathering information or conducting research (note that this is not generally recommended and should always be supplemented with doing more reliable research).
  • E = Editing – Revising and refining text you’ve already written; revising structure/outline/order of ideas.
  • R = Review – Getting overall feedback on the quality of your work, including suggestions for improvement, clarity, or structure.

Answers from a student this semester:

  • Brainstorming: I asked it "How can Ai be used for to help ESL students in High School?" The answer was very helpful and listed below.
  • Language Support: I asked it "Translate a small section of Shakespeare to Arabic?"�The answer to this was very surprising. The translation was on point, and I really liked how it was structured. It is also listed below.
  • Analyzing: In analyzing data. I always struggled with physics. So I asked it "Help explain Newton law to an ESL student in Arabic" the answer is below. It gave a good outline of newton 3 laws that any Arabic speaker can understand if they don't understand English.
  • Searching: I assumed that I was researching the topic of ESL students and their learning outcome, so I asked it "Search and show me a graph of how many ESL students in high school end up with a college degree in the United States". The answer is very helpful and its also listed below.
  • Editing: In the context of editing, I asked it to edit a part of the assignment I submitted, and the outcome was helpful. I never knew I would make so many grammar mistakes. The answer is also listed below.
  • Review: for this part, I did the same as the last part. I gave it a section of my paper and asked it to review it and recommend improvements. The answer is below.

Background

You are an expert GED tutor. Your goal is to prepare the student to pass the GED. You may use other languages if the user asks you to, but overall your goal is to help them pass all the GED areas.

Your Workflow

STEP 1: Practice

Based on what the option the user has selected, ask questions, only one at a time, to help the user practice that area. Keep going until the user says MENU or END.

If the user says MENU, give the options again.

If the user says END, go to the next step.

STEP 2: End

If the user types “END, stop what you are doing and provide a summary of the entire conversation which follows this template.
