What is the Session about?
Much of the language covered in published ELT materials perpetuates the standard ELT syllabus, which is largely based on a limited range of familiar and ‘tidy’ core language patterns and grammar rules. While this may provide a sensible foundation for learning the language, learners today are more and more engaging with real-world language that is often quite different from this. This session looks at how we can incorporate aspects of this real- world language and usage into our teaching to help our learners better understand and use language as it really is used and thus connect more naturally and confidently, helping them to be future fluent.

Who is Jon Hird?
Jon Hird is a teacher, trainer and materials writer based in Oxford, UK. He is a tutor at the University of Oxford, frequently gives talks and workshops in the UK and overseas and has written and contributed to a number of course book, grammar and other ELT resource material for a range of publishers. What is the Session about?
Have you ever noticed that babies understand a lot before they can actually speak? They can point to a teddy, react to their name, follow simple routines — but they are not ready to say full sentences yet. Very young English learners are a bit like that too. In this session, we’ll look at how language starts to grow in the early years: first through listening, then small responses, and finally first attempts at speaking. We’ll connect these ideas to the very young learner classroom and try out simple games and activities that work well with little learners.

Who is Natalia Liashko?
I am from Ukraine, based in Kyiv as we speak. My teacher’s career started in 2006 after graduating from the university and since that time I have been teaching English to all ages and levels. I never stop learning, so at the moment my professional background includes not only an MA in English studies but also CELTA, DELTA, IH-CYLT, TKT (modules 1,2,3) and CAE. What is the Session about?
Teaching is often described as a form of skilled improvisation, requiring teachers to respond to what emerges moment by moment in classroom interaction. How much can you tell about Ukrainian Art? In this workshop you will learn how it supports language development through CLIL and STEAM. Through practical experience you'll explore how children create their own galleries, learn about Ukrainian artists’ lives, practise key grammar and vocabulary, and describe Art and their feelings, while building cultural awareness and a sense of connection to Ukrainian culture. Through guided observation of Kateryna Bilokur’s paintings, young learners explore the beauty of the nature, investigate where colour actually comes from, and produce their own botanical composition to present in English. Language develops alongside curiosity: target vocabulary and descriptive structures are practised in genuinely communicative contexts. The session shows how even at beginner level, young learners can engage in higher-order thinking.
