Teacher Notes:

Whole class

Explain how the group work on the site is used. Talk through expectations and routines.

Explain what we will be using in maths this year:

  • Talk through XtraMaths, will give each of the students thier pins and outline the expectations around XtraMaths
  • Will then discuss Maths-Whizz and what the expectations for this is
  • Will complete XtraMaths in silence, once they have finished that they can complete Maths-Whizz. When most students have finished XtraMaths I will set a timer for 15 minutes so that they are getting this time on Maths-Whizz.

Waters

  • Complete all questions from each presentation
  • Make a copy of each of these presentations and save them in google drive
  • Make sure that these are all completed and also uploaded on student's blog
  • Will discuss how to write our addition problems out as a group.
    • Examples 43 + 27 = 70 39 + 28 = 67 36 + 39 = 40 + 20 = 60 30 + 20 = 50 30 + 30 = 60 3 +7 = 10 9 + 8 = 17 6 + 8 = 14 10 + 60 = 70 50 + 10 = 60 60 + 10 = 70 60 + 7 = 67 70 + 4 = 74

Lesson Name: Add/Sub (Week 2)

Will discuss with the students how to work out if the problem is an addition one or a subtraction one. Will point out they keywords to look for when looking at word problems and will do one of the examples from their task to help them understand this a bit better.

4 of 8

Teacher Notes:

Whole class

  • Will start each lesson with XtraMaths and then MathsWhizz
  • MathsWhizz is expected to have a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

Waters

  • Teaching points:
  • Will work on our subtraction problems finding out the keywords in a sentence to help us see what the difference between an addition problem and a subtraction problem is.
  • Will also go through how to explain and write how they got the answer to the maths problem in preparation for testing
  • When talking through with the group about addition and subtraction problems we will do so by using place value so they are set up for thier tasks this week.
    • Examples Addition: Miss Parrant has 35 stamps in her stamp collection. For her birthday she is given 23 more stamps for her stamp collection. How many stamps does Miss Parrant now have in her stamp collection?Subtraction: Miss Parrant is has 32 teg bags at home, she is having a party and will need 45 tea bags for all of her guests. How many more tea mags will Miss Parrant need to buy to make 45?Subtraction: Miss Parrant has baked 54 cookies for her class. Her sister comes home and eats 21 of these cookies how many cookies does Miss Parrant now have left?
  • Students will then go on to complete the tasks for this week which are place value.

Teacher Notes:

Whole class

  • Will start each lesson with XtraMaths and then MathsWhizz
  • MathsWhizz is expected to have a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

Waters

  • Teaching points:
  • This week we will start off by playing the game called secret number. The students will get into pairs and will take turns at having a number in their head. The numbers can go from 1 to 1000. Once they have decided on a number they must write this down on a piece of paper and hide it from their partner. The partner will then need to ask questions to allow him/her the opportunity to guess the correct number (I will model this with one student to start with). This will allow students the opportunity to have number recognition and number knowledge.
  • Then as a group we will look at number sequencing and how we can create our own pattern for others and also how to solve sequencing first with small 1 and 2 digit numbers then moving to 3 and 4.
    • Examples
    • 1, 3, 5, __, ___, 11, __, 15
    • 25, 27, __, ___, 33, __, __, 39
    • 102, 104, 106, ___, ____, 112, ___, ___
    • Ordering: From smallest to biggest - 56, 78, 39, 87, 24
    • Ordering from smallest to biggest 786, 874, 456, 992, 995, 768, 765
    • Ordering from biggest to smallest 978, 756, 876, 678, 950, 134, 256, 137

Lesson Name: Add/Sub (Week 4&5)

6 of 8

Teacher Notes:

Whole class

  • Will start each lesson with XtraMaths and then MathsWhizz
  • MathsWhizz is expected to have a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

Waters

  • Teaching points:
  • This week we will be looking at basic facts and have a game called I have who has - this will be a game that we will time in our group and try and get better each time we come together. This is to improve our basic facts recall time.
  • We will then discuss what family of facts are
  • Hunch: Many of them will have not seen this before or won’t be able to remember the relationship between the facts.
  • Will then explain what family of facts are - they are a group of three numbers that can be used any way and get the same answer example: 2,3 and 5 2+3 = 5, 3+2 = 5, 5-2 = 3, 5-3 = 2 this will be shown to them as a group so that we can see the pattern and also explain our family of facts. We will do a couple more of these as a group and then they will go off and complete a follow up activity.
  • Another activity that they will be working on this week is a basic facts presentation - they will need to complete this at least twice a week and they will need to time themsleves to see if they are getting better and quicker at solving their basic facts.

Lesson Name: Family of Facts (Week 5&6)

Teacher Notes:

Whole class

  • Will start each lesson with XtraMaths and then MathsWhizz
  • MathsWhizz is expected to have a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

Waters

  • Teaching points:
  • This week we will be looking at how to identify a subtraction problem from an addition problem and also be able to solve these problems using place value. We will be looking at 2 digit numbers to start with and will make it up to three digit subtraction problems.
    • Examples to work through:* Sally had 67 apples in her school bag on her way home from school she dropped 39 of these apples how many does she now have left?* Miss Parrant walked 37 metres on Sunday. Miss Parrant walked 23 meters on Monday. How many more metres did Miss Parrant walk on Sunday than on Monday?* Trish has 89 stamps, she gives 56 of them away to her friends. How many stamps does Trish now have?

Lesson Name: Add Sub(Week 7)

8 of 8

Teacher Notes:

Whole class

  • Will start each lesson with XtraMaths and then MathsWhizz
  • MathsWhizz is expected to have a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

Waters

  • Teaching points:
  • I will have the class in a small group and ask them what they know about multiplication and if they know their basic facts. We will play the “I have, who has” multiplication game as a warm up so that we are practicing our basic multiplication facts. I will time this each time we have a maths lesson so that we are getting faster at this and can see improvement.
  • We will then as a group go through some multiplication problems with counters on the table, we will do a few of these examples until everyone understands how we are getting the answers. I will talk about groups of this generally means times tables.
    • 3 x 4 = show imaging each of these using counters and other materials
    • 2 x 7 = show imaging each of these using counters and other materials
    • 5 x 3 = demonstrate how these will be expected to be show in their maths books
    • 4 x 5 = demonstrate how these will be expected to be shown in their maths books
  • Once we have gone over these problems we will go through the first example on the multiplication problems so that the expectations are clear as to what is expected from this work.
  • Will then have the students complete one problem in front of me so that I know that they know what they are doing.

Lesson Name: Mult/Div (Week 9)
