Cynthia Cotner is a writer, educator, and contemporary artist known for her innovative approach to bookmaking, calligraphy, mixed media, and conceptual projects. Leaving Garland, Texas in her twenties, she has lived in Oklahoma, Chama, Santa Fe, and San Diego only recently returning to her hometown. She began exhibiting her work in Oklahoma with the conceptual Beneath the Breast exhibit, an installation of more than 50 plaster casts of actual women’s breasts with their stories collaged on the inside, which hung from the ceiling with fine filament strands. She has since exhibited her mixed media work in Taos as well as San Diego. Cynthia’s style is characterized by combining bold color, abstract marks, and original text in calligraphy with dimensional facets of viewing. Her seminal piece, Liminal Spaces was selected as the cover art for CALYX, a journal of art and writing by women. Currently, Cynthia is publishing a confluence of previous art with her original novel. “I believe art is a doorway to understanding the layers of one’s consciousness and connection to the world and beyond,” says Cynthia. Cynthia Cotner strives to push the boundaries of juxtaposing her journey of becoming with her innovative approach and evocative works. She conducts workshops in calligraphy, bookmaking, sketching, marbling, and wordweaving. Follow her at www.ahacreativityconcepts.com

Dragon Scale Book: The Bardo of Becoming

43” x 14”

This is a one-of-a-kind handmade book designed after the ancient Chinese Dragon Scale scrolls from the ancient Tang Dynasty. Pages are layered and pasted with strips of a print from the artist’s original art. This resembles dragon scales creating a scroll-like book that can be un-scrolled to read with the pages appearing to flutter like a dragon’s scales when turned. The inside text is an original poem created while painting the original art.

Beneath the Breast

6’ x 6’

$1,500

Cynthia Cotner

Beneath the Breast is conceptual art that questions our perception of the breast. The vellum banner’s black Neuland calligraphy illustrates slang words sometimes associated with the breast while the white lettering in-between lists words of endearment from women’s feelings about the breast.

The photos of breast castings, taken from a previous exhibition, highlight different stages in a woman’s life from puberty to pregnancy to even undergoing a mastectomy from breast cancer. The abstract swirls imitate the shape of the breast with the artist’s original poem centered around them. The poem asks the reader to consider the context of the breast.

The wire form highlights female empowerment and strength. Inside is a breast plaster casting of a breast cancer survivor with her words collaged on the casting. Sewn onto the metal wiring are women, past and present, who against the odds, accomplished incredible feats. Around the form are phrases, poems, and images that show the resilience and strength of the female.

This art asks the viewer to consider a sometimes taboo subject of the breast as well as the courage, resilience, and strength women rise to as equals in our world. It hopes to serve as an inspiration to all girls, women, and men.

Female Empowerment

5’6” x 2’

$900.

This female wire mannequin embodies the accomplishments, resilience, and feelings of what it is to be a female in today’s world. Text of women’s words are interwoven in calligraphy with gold threads onto the wire. Biographies of women throughout the past and present, skirt the bottom of the form. An actual breast cancer survivor’s plaster casting illuminates the inside with her words collaged around and within the breasts. Lights illuminated the form inspiring women and girls to light up the world with their strength, fortitude, and leadership.
