Can I Choose a Class That was NOT Recommended by my Current Teacher? Technically, yes, BUT…

  • It is very strongly recommended that students adhere to the recommended course. Teachers know their curriculum and students well. Their recommendation comes from years of data indicating what it takes to succeed in a given class.

  • If a student chooses to go against the recommended course, they may end up taking a course that is too hard, but will not necessarily be able to change their schedule to move down during the school year

Is Summer Acceleration (including Summer Geometry) Allowed? Technically, yes, BUT…

  • Taking a math course during the summer is very strongly discouraged. Summer math courses do not provide the same foundation as yearlong courses

  • Students who decide to advance in math via summer acceleration must submit a transcript of completed coursework to shs-registrar@lgsuhsd.org by August 1.
  • Students who decide to advance in math via summer acceleration and plan to take an honors/A.P. level course the next year, must pass a placement test on August 6.
