LESSON NAME: SCENT AND BEHAVIOUR

OBJECTIVE:

To teach students about how different scents can affect behavior in animals and humans, and how this is related to survival and reproduction. Students will research and present on how pheromones work and their role in various species.

MATERIAL:

  • Access to research materials such as books, articles, and online resources
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Access to multimedia tools such as videos and images
  • Small containers of different scents of Singapore such as “Arab Street”, “Raffles spices”, “Orchids”, “curry” etc

ACTIVITY:

  1. Introduce the topic of scents and behavior, explaining that different scents can affect the behavior of animals and humans. Discuss how these behaviors are related to survival and reproduction.
  2. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a different species to research. Each group should focus on the role of pheromones in their assigned species, including how they are produced, detected, and used for communication.
  3. Provide students with access to research materials and multimedia tools to aid in their research. Encourage them to take notes and gather information to prepare a presentation on their assigned species.
  4. Have students present their research to the class, using chart paper, markers, and multimedia tools to illustrate their findings. Encourage them to highlight the role of pheromones in their assigned species and the impact they have on behavior.
  5. Introduce the topic of scents and behavior, explaining that different scents can affect the behavior of animals and humans. Discuss how these behaviors are related to survival and reproduction.

ACTIVITY:

6. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a different species to research. Each group should focus on the role of pheromones in their assigned species, including how they are produced, detected, and used for communication.

7. Provide students with access to research materials and multimedia tools to aid in their research. Encourage them to take notes and gather information to prepare a presentation on their assigned species.

8. Have students present their research to the class, using chart paper, markers, and multimedia tools to illustrate their findings. Encourage them to highlight the role of pheromones in their assigned species and the impact they have on behavior.

9. As a class, conduct an experiment to demonstrate how scents can affect behavior. Distribute small containers of different scents, such as peppermint, lavender, and lemon, and ask students to smell them and note how they feel. Have them share their observations and discuss how different scents can affect mood and behavior.

10 Wrap up the lesson by discussing the importance of understanding the role of scents in behavior, both in animals and humans. Encourage students to think about how they can use this knowledge in their daily lives.

Assessment:

  • Evaluate student presentations on their assigned species and the role of pheromones in behavior.
  • Assess student participation in the class experiment and their ability to observe and describe the effects of different scents on mood and behavior.
  • Encourage students to reflect on what they have learned and how it relates to their own experiences and interactions with others.
