Warm-Up: The Crumple Exercise

To begin:

  1. Take a half-sheet of paper.
  2. Write down a mistake that you have made today or this week on your piece of paper. Keep in mind, we’ll be sharing these with our classmates!
  3. Do not put your name on your paper.
  4. Crumple up your piece of paper.
  5. When directed by your teacher(s), throw it into the center of the classroom-with as close as you can to the same feeling you have when you make a mistake. (frustration, anger)

Next up:

  1. Pick up a random crumpled piece of paper from the center of the room.
  2. Open it and look at the other person’s mistake.
  3. Going around the room, you will read the mistakes aloud and:
    1. Give an example of how the person could do better next time or give an example of how to turn the negative into a positive.

    1. When we had our Social Studies test, I was too busy to study because I had sports, chores and too much homework.
  2. Mrs. Phillips offers the following suggestion: Since Mrs. Maigret and Mrs. Masinda gave a week’s notice for the test, you can arrange small chunks of time each day to study for the test.

How did they overcome adversity to succeed?

Abraham Lincoln

He went on to become one of the most influential presidents in U.S. history.
