Unlocking the potential for blockchain in emerging markets.

BACKGROUND

Blockchain is a confusing and controversial term, due to the large number of scams, hyped impact, failed projects and unsupported claims related to it. However, the development of crypto-assets and distributed ledger technology is evolving rapidly, as is the amount of information (both neutral and vested) surrounding it.

There is “a growing knowledge gap between the legislators, policymakers, economists and the technology” (IMF). Investment professionals need to understand the real potential of the technology, and the change it can bring to the governance, the transparency and the implementation of many products and models, while also understanding the risks and the limitations.

Blockchain is already disturbing many industries. Many pilots have been launched in the financial services, access to energy and agriculture – affecting to different degrees , directly and indirectly, the impact investing sector

Investment professionals are seeing an increasing number of blockchain-based projects in emerging markets: they need to acquire the knowledge and tools to be able to appraise the project and engage in fruitful business discussions with current and future clients.

As an investment professional, understanding the distributed ledger technology and the crypto-asset is the prerequisite to stay innovative and at the edge of the fintech space.
