Do you know your child’s attendance record?
An absence is any non attendance during instructional times,
unless the student is in an approved activity or in the homebound program.
EVERY DAY COUNTS!
If you want your child to be successful at school then good attendance matters!
Here at Byron Elementary, we want our students to attend and achieve.
If a school can improve attendance by 1% they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment.
Please help us and your child by ensuring their attendance remains above 95%.
This allows them to achieve their full potential.
What is Good Attendance?
Attendance Procedures for Families
Documentation
a. Students who desire to document an absence shall present a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian within three (3) days of returning to school.
b. Failure to present an excuse within three (3) days shall result in an unexcused absence. c. Documentation presented after three (3) days will not be considered. Documentation may not be sent by fax, e-mail, or telephone.
d. A student absent for five (5) consecutive days must submit a medical excuse for absences to be excused.
***It has been approved for doctor’s excuses to be faxed (478) 956-5910 or emailed diane.lowder@peachschools.org as long as they are legible.***
Unexcused Absences
The Peach County school system will use its best efforts to follow these procedures to reduce truancy, which is defined as any child subject to compulsory attendance who, during the school calendar year, has more than FIVE days of UNEXCUSED absences. Unexcused absences will be subject to attendance investigation and may result in a penalty as imposed by the compulsory school attendance law. Home suspensions are not considered as truant under the compulsory school attendance law. Excessive absences may result in retention.
What is truancy?
Truancy is any intentional, unjustified, unauthorized or illegal absence from compulsory education. It is a deliberate absence by a student’s own free will and usually does not refer to legitimate excused absences, such as ones related to medical conditions. Truancy is a crime in Georgia – not for the child, but for the parents. It is a parent’s duty to make sure that his or her child attends school. Truancy in the state of Georgia is a misdemeanor, can result in a fine and also jail time.
Students may be temporarily excused from school for the following circumstances:
Attendance information is located on pages 7,8,11-14 in the
Peach County School Student and Parent Handbook
What does being sick mean?
Illness
If a student becomes too ill to remain in class, the student may contact his/her guardians to make arrangements to be checked out of school. The principal should be notified in writing if a student has a chronic illness or disability that could require special or emergency treatment. Students should not be returned to school until fever and/or vomiting has ceased for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. Medicine must be kept in the school office and dispensed by the school nurse.
Because head lice are so easily spread from one student to another, students with head lice (or eggs) cannot remain at school. If a student has head lice, his/her parents will be asked to pick up the child. Students will not be allowed to return to school until proof of effective treatment is provided and an examination indicates the student no longer has head lice. In the event that head lice are a recurring problem, clearance from the Peach County Health Department or a physician may be necessary before the student may return to school.

Please plan family vacations and
non- emergency doctor appointments on school holidays.

Food for Thought:
Students can not concentrate if they are tired or hungry, that’s why we will provide a hot and cold breakfast option for all students at no charge each day.
The goal of the School Nutrition Program is to provide a healthy and nutritious breakfast and lunch to assist students in meeting academic and physical achievement.
Let’s Stay Connected!
Messages will be sent to BES families from the school and teachers with the REMIND and Class DOJO apps. Important information and fun times are also posted on our Facebook, be sure to like and follow our page to ensure you stay informed!
