Learning and Taha Hinengaro (mental/EMotional WellBeing)

When taha hinengaro is strong, you can better cope with life’s challenges. You can express your feelings and reach out for support from friends, whānau and hoamahi (colleagues) if you need to.

The Benefits of learning

The benefits of learning new information and skills are widely researched as having a positive impact on our taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing).

Learning, remaining curious and setting goals are important for everyone at every stage of life. It helps with brain development in our youth. A love of learning as a child can prevent mental health issues later in life.

As we mature, learning helps us to set and achieve goals which is strongly connected to higher levels of wellbeing. We thrive when these goals are chosen by us, the feeling of satisfaction and achievement from completing a goal is something special. Learning is more than just formal education. It’s about being curious about the world around us and learning from our environment, other people and the resources we can access.

Your Task

Our task this term is to learn a new skill, maybe something that you’ve been meaning to learn for a while or maybe even something you have been dreaming about!

Try something new or rediscover an old interest. Sign up for a course or take on a different responsibility at work. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving - seek out new experiences and dare yourself!

Some inspiration!
