Communication Expectations

When you are matched, what is one fun activity you would like to do together with your mentor?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Remember these expectations each time you are writing to your mentor. Your mentor wants to know who you are and how to support you throughout this process. The more open you are, the more you can collaborate with your mentor.

  • Since this is a message to your mentor, start with hi “mentor’s name.”

  • You should always answer the prompt given to you in the lesson.

  • You should always respond to all questions your mentor asks you.

  • You should always ask your own questions to your mentor.

  • You should try to break up your writing into paragraphs.

  • End the message with an ending such as “talk to you soon, let me know what you think, see you soon at the event.”

Mentee Connection

1) Say hello to your mentor and introduce yourself. Ask one thing that you would like to learn more about your mentor (their job, their life experiences, etc.).

            Hi, I am…

I’m excited to get to know you.

            Can you share …

2) Finish these 3 sentence starters so your mentor can get to know a little bit about you.

Most people would describe me as...

Something you wouldn’t guess about me is...

One thing that I am working on this year is...

3) End your message by telling your mentor that you are looking forward to receiving their reply.

Directions: Read the following samples and determine if they follow all of the writing expectations.

Sample 1:

My name is Miguel, and I am excited to work with you. Most people would describe me as a funny and social person. I am looking forward to your reply.

Sample 2:

Hello John,

My name is Miguel. It is great to meet you and I am excited to get to know each other and work together. I read that you work in business. I am thinking about going into business myself. What is the focus of your job?

Most people would describe me as funny and say that I like to goof around a lot, but I know when to focus on my academics and when to have fun. Something you wouldn’t guess about me is that I write and perform slam poetry. One thing that I am working on this year is passing my Math class. I know I will need to get good at Math to study business so I’m going to put a lot of effort into my goal.

I am looking forward to hearing about who you are more. I feel a little weird introducing myself online, but I know you are doing that same thing. I would like to know why you decided to volunteer and become a mentor.

Talk soon,

Miguel
