Strawbees Robotics with Micro:bit is what our 6th grade elective program uses for computer science and engineering. The begin with the basics of the Micro:bit; learning about sensors, inputs, outputs, etc. Then add in Strawbees builds with the robotics board and servo motors to make their programs come to life!

The Strawbees/Micro:bit robotics invention kit really has been a great way to tie those to aspects of what I teach together. There really isn’t a more open ended platform that ties those things together with as much creative freedom for the students.

How does it compare to other types of tools that you use now or in the past?

Most recently, my current group of 6th graders did an engineering design process project that took a design that already existed from the Strawbees/Micro:bit Robotics platform and worked to make the build “better” or more “real-world”. For example, one group took the Magic 8-Ball build and re-coded it to function as kind of “earthquake sensor”, which lead to them building multiple of the “sensors” and using the radio function of the Micro:bit was able to wireless connect them. When one sensor was trigger, they all went off.

Can you give us an example of a project you’ve run that you enjoy?

I use Strawbees to spark creativity and hands-on learning in 3rd–5th grade GT and gen ed students by combining building with. It’s an exciting way for students to bring their ideas to life through movement and design!

Strawbees is more flexible and imaginative—it empowers rapid prototyping and playful experimentation. I also love that there is a free curriculum available to use as a guide.

One project I really enjoyed was the Crane Challenge—students designed and built working cranes using Strawbees and microbits. It was exciting to see them problem-solve, reinforce their builds, help, and cheer each other on as they improved their designs!
