What is AVID?

AVID is a college readiness program �that helps middle school and �high school students prepare for �college and life after graduation

AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Elective & AVID Schoolwide

• We will learn more about the AVID Elective on the next slides.
• AVID Schoolwide is where all teachers and staff in our schools are trained and using AVID strategies, so all students have access to help them learn, grow and be more prepared for life after graduating from Robbinsdale Area Schools.
• As a district we continue work to �train our staff in AVID.

The AVID Program

AVID is for:

• “A”, “B”, and “C” students (2.0-3.5)
• Students who want to go to college
• Students who are willing work hard
• Students who would like to work on their study and organization skills

• First Generation College Student
• Underrepresented on College Campuses
• Students of Color
• Qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch
• Special Life Circumstances

(foster care, loss of a parent, etc.)

The AVID Program

The AVID Program

• The goal is that students are in AVID in 7th-8th grade in middle school and 9th-12th in high school.
• High school AVID students earn elective credits for graduation.

• Explore Careers
• Learn about colleges
• Preparing for the ACT
• Applying for college
• Completing the FAFSA
• Applying for scholarships
• and much more

AVID Skills

• In AVID we focus on WICOR - writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization & reading
• Students use planners to stay organized, take notes to help them learn and learn a variety of reading strategies to help them be college ready scholars.
• Students explore careers and colleges through reading, presentations, fields trips and guest speakers.

A typical week in AVID

• Two days of tutorials - bring problems or questions of their other classes and get help in small groups with a tutor
• Two days of AVID curriculum - skills, problem solving, research, careers, colleges
• Fun Friday - guest speakers, college field trips, team building, etc.

AVID Applications

Applications for AVID for both Armstrong �and Cooper will be available in electronic or paper copy in the Counseling Office and �are due Friday March 6.
