Washington Terrace Elementary is a Title 1 School

What is Title I?

  • A school qualifies as Title I based on the percentage of students on free and reduced lunch
  • The purpose of Title I is “To provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps.” (ESSA Sec. 1001, P. 22)
  • Title I is federally-funded program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) reauthorized by Congress as The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in December 2015

TITLE 1 GOALS

  • Help students to achieve proficiency on state academic standards (primarily in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science)
  • Build teacher capacity through high-quality, ongoing professional learning opportunities.
  • Enhance parents’ abilities to help their children succeed through high-quality parent and family engagement activities.
  • Provide a well-rounded education for all students

TEACHER and STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Encourage and support students’ learning.
  • Believe that all students can learn.
  • Use positive actions and words that follow “Leader in Me” and school-wide positive behavior systems.
  • Maintain and foster high standards of academic achievement and positive behavior.
  • Respectfully and accurately inform parents of their child’s progress.
  • Have high expectations for all students and be committed to continuous growth for the teacher, staff, and school
  • Respect cultural differences of students, their families and other staff members.
  • Help students resolve conflicts in positive, nonviolent ways.
  • Coordinate efforts with other staff to support the success of each child.
  • Create a caring, inclusive, stimulating, and safe school/classroom setting.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make certain my child attends school regularly and is on time.
  • See that my child is well rested and has breakfast each day.
  • Attend at least two conferences and communicate regularly with my child’s teacher to ensure his/her academic success.
  • Treat teachers, staff and administration with courtesy and respect.
  • Support the school and staff in maintaining proper discipline.
  • Read with my child and allow him/her to see me read regularly.
  • Encourage a positive attitude towards school.
  • Volunteer in my child’s classroom as appropriate.
  • Review information and work sent home and respond as necessary.

WHAT ARE YOUR RIGHTS?

A school that receives Title I funds shall provide to parents of participating children: 1112(e)(1)(B) and ESEA 1116(c)

At the beginning of each school year the LEA shall notify parents of their right to request*: ESEA 1112(e)(1)(2) and 1116(b)

Information on the level of achievement and academic growth of the student;

☐ Timely notice if their child has been assigned to, or taught, for 4 or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements for the grade level or subject area taught.

☐ Timely information about Title I programs;

☐ A description and explanation of the curriculum and assessments used to measure student progress;

☐ If requested, opportunities for regular meetings to provide suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children;

☐ The opportunity to be involved in the planning, review, and improvement of the engagement policy and schoolwide program unless the school already has a process in place for involving parents (with adequate representation);

☐ If the schoolwide program plan is not satisfactory to parents, the school will submit any comments to the LEA; and

☐ The professional qualifications of their child’s teachers, i.e., whether state licensed, whether teaching under emergency/provisional status, and whether teaching in the discipline of certification;

☐ Information on whether their child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications; and

☐ Information regarding any State or LEA policy related to student participation in any assessments mandated by section 1111(b)(2) and by the State or LEA, which shall include a policy, procedure, or parental right to opt out where applicable. *Consider adding specific information about the procedures for accessing this information. In addition, LEAs must:

☐ Post information on each assessment required by the State, on LEA and school (where practicable) websites.

☐ Conduct an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the Parent and Family Engagement Policy in improving the academic quality of all Title I schools (as per LEA Engagement Policy.)

☐ If the LEA plan is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, the LEA shall submit any parent comments when submitting the plan to the State.

Washington Terrace operates as a Title 1 schoolwide program

“Schoolwide” means:

  • The school uses Title I funds to upgrade the entire educational program of the school
  • Title I funds are used to serve all children in order to raise academic achievement.
  • Title I funds will be used to provide additional assistance to all students who experience difficulties in meeting the State’s performance targets.

What’s the plan for Washington Terrace?

  • Continue to provide paraprofessionals to assist classroom teacher in targeted instruction.
  • Look at student data in PLC meetings to ensure all students’ needs are being met
  • Use PSI, PASI, and Acadience data as Benchmark Assessments to inform instruction
  • Use evidence based research to determine and support the use of highly effective instructional strategies.
  • Keep a master schedule for school to provide uninterrupted time for classroom teachers to ensure quality instruction for Tier I and Tier II
  • Leader in Me (training, support & materials)
  • Continue positive Tier I and Tier II school-wide behavior incentive program.

DAILY DROP OFF AND PICK UP

  • Drop off students in drop off areas only

BELL SCHEDULE

  • School starts at 8:35 a.m.
    • Students line up outside of their grade level doors
    • Outside doors locked after the second bell. Any students arriving past that time will need to be checked in at the office
  • Regular day ends at 3:20 p.m.
  • Short day ends at 12:20 p.m.
    • All Wednesday’s are short days-there are a few other days throughout the school year-those dates can be found on the school website
