The verb form hay expresses the idea of existence. It is used with both singular and plural nouns, equivalent to ‘there is’ or ‘there are’ in English.

¿Qué hay en el salón de clase? What is there in the classroom?

Hay dos ventanas y una puerta. There are two windows and a door.

​

Hay un profesor de español nuevo. There is a new Spanish teacher.

�Note the difference between the verb ser (to be), which is used to identify nouns, and hay, which simply states their existence.

¿Qué es? What is it/that? �Es un bolígrafo. It is a pen.

​

¿Cuántos hay? How many are there?

Hay tres. There are three.
