“Prayerful discernment must be born of a readiness to listen: to the Lord and to others, and to reality itself, which always challenges us in new ways.”

DISCERNMENT #1: IDENTITY AND MEMBERSHIP

New Identity Statement: "GCCM seeks to be a Spirit-led movement that brings Catholics together to fulfill its stated mission [see mission section]. The movement brings together a wide range of Catholic (1) organizations and (2) grassroots members from around the world. These members walk together in synodality and communion with the universal Church on a journey of ecological conversion. Seeking unity in diversity, organizational and grassroots members come together to pray, collaborate and mobilize in response to the "cry of the earth and the cry of the poor." Guided by a spirit of subsidiarity, when the time and context are right, they co-create or engage with local Laudato Si' Circles and Chapters and connect with the global movement on a wide range of initiatives to bring Laudato Si' to life."

In other words, we are a hybrid movement, with two major branches:

“To inspire and mobilize the Catholic community to care for our common home and achieve climate and ecological justice.”

DISCERNMENT #3: MISSION

10 of 15

  • “Inspire” refers to our spirituality efforts towards “Ecological Conversion” goal
  • Affirmed wider “Care for our common home” approach.
    • Subsidiarity allows members to work on various local issues, beyond climate (as it’s currently happening)
  • Special attention to “climate & ecological justice”, i.e. climate & biodiversity emergencies are key global priorities that unite us.

DISCERNMENT #3: MISSION

DISCERNMENT #4: NAME

"Similar to the name choice that occurs in the sacrament of confirmation, we are now in a 'confirmation moment'."

- Amy Woolam Echeverria, GCCM co-founder

Several problems with GCCM:

  • Difficult to say and remember; excessively long.

  • "Climate" is clear in some languages (weather vs climate), but confusing in others (weather = climate).

  • "Climate" sounds too restricted and does not represent the broader work of ecological conversion and integral ecology that characterizes us.

  • Translation problem (GCCM in English, MCMC in Spanish, SRKS in Polish, MCGC in Portuguese, etc).
