Entrance Requirements for Advanced Math & ELA

  • Must score above 70th Percentile on the Spring NWEA assessment in 5th Grade.
  • Will listen to appeals, but have found students scoring below 70th are unsuccessful.
  • Must have executive functioning skills to keep up with the pace of class.
  • Must have curiosity to further explore Mathematics / ELA concepts in depth.

What is the difference between regular class and advanced classes?

Advanced Math---Accelerated Math

Students will:

  • Move at a FASTer pace (Accelerated)
    • Complete all of 6th and half of 7th curriculum in one year.
  • Strengthen essential Algebraic concepts
  • Improve thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills
  • Excel in standards including: Precision, Explanation and Real-World Application

Advanced ELA

Students will:

  • Move at a much faster pace.
  • Read, write and explore MORE!
    • Read, discuss and analyze a wide variety of texts.
    • Read more independent books
    • Write short & longer narratives.
    • Explore poetry and figurative language.
    • Write informational texts in a variety of structures.
  • Participate in collaborative learning.
  • Identify and use common Greek and Latin root words
  • Learn and practice public speaking/presentational skills
