The SAT is made up of 2 parts:

  • Critical Reading (200-800)
  • Mathematics (200-800)

ACT/SAT SCORES

  • Many schools are “Test Optional”, however, some are returning to requiring the admissions tests
  • Schools will evaluate all information that they receive from you. Without scores, they may need to look more heavily on other aspects of your application.
  • Schools have said that sending scores can only help you and not hurt/penalize if you send them.
  • You may still need to have ACT/SAT scores to meet State Scholarships requirements

SAT/ACT FEE WAIVERS

  • If you qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch you are eligible to receive 2 fee waivers from ACT and SAT each.
  • **please note: the cafeteria is not authorized to release your FRL status to us or our bookkeeper. If you receive confirmation of qualifying for FRL, please bring us that approval letter so that we can provide various waivers and our bookkeeper can waive your school fees.
  • Fee Waivers for College Applications are also available in your Collegeboard.org account once you use an SAT Fee Waiver.
  • ACT also has fee waivers for College Applications. See your counselor after you use a fee waiver to take the ACT test.

  • TCTC and other 2 year technical colleges require it in order to determine your accurate placement. Scores are different at each technical college.

FAFSA

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid – fafsa.gov
  • Usually opens late Fall of your senior year
  • Parent and student will need a FSA ID to complete
  • Data retrieval tool to automatically import your tax information
  • Taxes from 2025 will be used

  • Please keep looking throughout the year for scholarships to be updated on the site.

**You do not have to wait until senior year for many of the scholarships. Even if it’s just for seniors, prepare ahead.

  • LIFE Scholarship
    • Up to $5,000 per year (4 year college or 2 year college)
    • Must meet 2 of the 3 requirements for a 4 year college
      • 3.0 GPA on SC scale upon high school graduation
      • Rank in top 30% of graduating class
      • 1100 on SAT or 22 on ACT
    • 2 year college requirement is a 3.0 GPA on SC scale
    • No application required.
  • HOPE Scholarship
    • Up to $2,800 for one year at a 4 year college
    • Must earn a 3.0 GPA on SC scale upon high school graduation
    • No application required.
  • Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
    • Up to $6,700 for 1st year and then up to $7,500 for years 2, 3, & 4.
    • Must meet all requirements
      • 1200 on SAT or 25 on ACT
      • 3.5 GPA on SC scale
      • Rank in Top 6% of the class at the end of 10th, 11th, or 12th grade
    • Alternate route:
      • 1400 on SAT or 31 on ACT
      • 4.0 GPA on SC scale
    • Application process managed by the PVHS Guidance Office

There are 2 different GPA’s reflected on your transcript. ��The 4.0 unweighted scale is a traditional college scale. You receive 4 points for an A no matter if the grade is a 90 or a 100, CP or AP level.��The SC UGP GPA is on the SC weighted scale. This is what the 4 year colleges in SC reference as well as the state scholarships. The weighted scale considers the specific numerical average rather than just the letter grade. It also takes into consideration the level of the course (CP, Honors, AP/college).
