Activity 1:

“How Might We?” Question

At the end of this activity, our coalition will have developed a “How Might We?” question that will help us shift our thinking to solutions for our problem statement

9 of 32

Example

“How Might We?” Question

Trailblazer Town’s Problem Statement:

The Trailblazer Town community wants to understand how the district utilizes the Profile of a Graduate; however, they don’t feel connected to what’s happening in the classrooms because of limited communication

Possible “How Might We…” Questions

How might we educate parents about our profile of a graduate so they are not so confused?

How might we make our profile of a graduate more relevant for students so they understand how the competencies prepare them for life and a career?

10 of 32

“How Might We?” Question

Template

Based on our L3 Problem Statement:

How might we (intended experience) for (user) so that (desired effect)?

11 of 32

Gut Check & Reflection

Activity Wrap-Up

  • Does this HMW Question align with the future vision for the theme we chose?

  • Does our HMW Question reflect the empathy data that has been collected from our community?

  • Will this “How Might We” question meet the needs expressed and get our district closer to the future vision described in our theme?

Activity 2:

Ideation Warm-Up

At the end of this activity, our coalition will have practiced brainstorming ideas on our own and in a group

13 of 32

Practice Round 1:

Timer: ____ minutes

On a sticky note or piece of paper:

  • List as many types of candy as you can

When the timer ends, get in your small group and share for ____ minutes

  • Build on each other’s ideas and add new ideas to a list

14 of 32

Practice Round 2:

On a sticky note or piece of paper:

  • List as many possible solutions to the “HMW” question as you can

When the timer ends, get in your small group and share for ____ minutes

  • Build on each other’s ideas and add new ideas to a list

Problem Statement

“How Might We” Question

Travelers need a pleasant flying experience; however, the current airport security process is inconvenient and inefficient

How might we improve the airport security process for a more convenient and efficient traveling experience?

Timer: ____ minutes

15 of 32

Gut Check & Reflection

Activity Wrap-Up

  • Did we engage our creativity?

  • Did we aim for quantity, stay focused on the problem, and build on each other’s ideas?

  • Are we comfortable with the ideation process?

Activity 3:

Prototype Ideation

At the end of this activity, our coalition will have a list of possible prototype ideas that are possible solutions to our Problem Statement and “How Might We?” Question

17 of 32

Time to ideate!

On a sticky note or piece of paper:

  • List as many possible solutions to the “HMW” question as you can

When the timer ends, get in your small group and share for ____ minutes

  • Build on each other’s ideas and add new ideas to a list

Ideation Share-Outs

Each small group will have an opportunity to share their collective lists with the whole coalition

We’ll bring all of our idea lists together

19 of 32

Gut Check & Reflection

Activity Wrap-Up

  • Did we focus on the topic of our Problem Statement and “How Might We” statement?

  • Did we create space for everyone to contribute ideas in a safe and encouraging way?

  • What went well? How can we improve our practice of co-creation together?

Activity 4:

Selecting a Prototype Idea

At the end of this activity, our coalition will have selected one idea from the group ideation session to develop into a prototype for a local assessment and accountability system

21 of 32

Narrow it down:

Timer: ____ minutes

Let’s review our coalition’s list of ideas in small groups:

  • Look for clusters of similar ideas across each list
  • As you find patterns in similar solutions, write down these combined ideas on a new piece of chart paper. As you combine ideas, cross them off of their original list

Remember, you’ve already spent some time in the ideation activity combining ideas in your small groups. This activity helps us further narrow down ideas across every group’s list

Next, let’s sort these ideas into four categories:

Let’s vote!

4

Most closely aligned to our problem

Focus on the ideas in this category:

Each person on your coalition has 3 votes

  • Draw a star next to the top 3 ideas you feel best meet the needs of your community and serve as strong solutions to your L3 problem

  • Please use your 3 votes on 3 different ideas in the “most closely aligned” category, do not put all 3 of your stars next to only one idea

1. Career Fair

Attend a career fair set up by the school; Visit tables and meet the career experts, asking questions; Complete the graphic organizer collecting important information on careers, salary, education, etc.

Invite a wide range of experts from various careers; Create graphic organizer for completion by students; Clarify expectations for students; Acclimate students to greeting protocols, asking good questions, etc.; Arrange logistics of career fair

Discuss careers with child prior to career fair event; Follow up with child after career day about lessons learned; Speak at career events; Volunteer to support career events throughout the year

Gut Check & Reflection

Activity Wrap-Up

Storyboard:

  • Does our storyboard identify the key user/stakeholder?
  • Does our storyboard address the core problem?
  • Is this feasible?
  • Is this bold and aspirational?
  • If this scenario becomes reality in our district, what data might we collect?

Creative Matrix:

  • Are all of the cells filled with ideas that make sense?
  • Are the ideas concrete and well defined?
  • Did we leave any key stakeholders or important stages out?
  • If this scenario becomes reality in our district, what data might we collect?
