Angler Fish

The angler fish (Lophiiformes)  has more then 200 known species. Scientist believe that the angler fish species has been here for 100 to 130 million years. The angler fish can be found at the bottom of the ocean. They can live more than a mile deep in ocean water.

Discription

The angler fish has a big head and a wide mouth, with sharp pointed teeth.They have a long filament sprouting from the middle of the head, that is shaped like a fishing rod. It has a flattened white belly, with abroad upper portion. They can be green, brown, grey and black. Some agler fish can be as big as 3 feet long but most are smaller, less than a foot.

Predation

The light on top of its head is called illicium, it is used to lure in prey. Filled with bacteria that lights up and wiggles to resemble prey and baits prey close enough to be snatched. Their diet includes small fish, shrimp, worms, small squid and turtles.

Environment

Angler fish live in the deep sea, this environment is hostile to humans. With pressure between 20 to 1,000 atmospheres. A lack of oxyegen and temperatures as low as 3 degrees celscius. The species has adapt to the environment and cannot survive outside it's environment.
