Muscular Endurance is part of Health Related Fitness

  • Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to repeat contractions (eg keep moving) for an extended period of time.
  • Muscular endurance is very important in daily life as well as sport. Without it, your muscles would get tired within a few minutes. You wouldn’t be able to walk, climb stairs or lift object, or even open doors!
  • All sports require muscular endurance, eg Swimming, so that you can keep kicking and using arms for longer; Tennis, to keep moving around the court and hitting the ball; Gymnastics, to control the body for all moves as well as during take-off and landings.

Many athletes spend a lot of time focusing on their Muscular Endurance.

Success Criteria:

  • ALWAYS warm up by raising your body temperature and heart rate before stretching. Your muscles might tear and get injured otherwise.
  • Make sure you complete every rep correctly, dont cheat by doing more reps that are only half completed!
  • As soon as you stop for more than 5 seconds, you have reached your max reps. Do not keep resting and then carrying on because your score will not be a true reflection of your muscular endurance.

Watch the “Sofa Workout” on the next slide. You can perform all exercises on the floor if you prefer.

Count the number of times (reps) you could do each exercise continuously before you had to stop.

Remember, if you stop for longer than 3 seconds, you must stop and record that score.
