SENIOR APPOINTMENTS

  • Counselors will meet with each senior.
  • Students sign up through their counselor’s link listed on the AK Counselors' website or Navaince. These will be active on September 16th.
  • Appointments will start the week of September 20th.
  • Seniors should be prepared for the meeting by doing as much as possible on the Senior Handout given out in homeroom.
  • Senior appointments are between the student and counselor only. Gather parent questions before the meeting.

  • Review Graduation Requirements
  • Receive an unofficial transcript with updated rank/GPA
  • We will mainly be working in Naviance together under the tab “Colleges I’m Applying To” so be sure you have everything ready BEFORE your Senior Appointment
  • Review your list of colleges you are applying to (Safety, 50/50, Reach)
  • Review Deadlines & Transcript Request process (do not request before senior appointment). Are Recommendations Needed?
  • Test Scores- Check which schools are still test optional due to COVID (YOU will send scores directly from College Board and/or ACT to each colleges, if applicable).

WHAT ARE COLLEGES LOOKING FOR?

The admissions process varies from school to school. In general, these factors are important when admissions offices consider applications:

      • Rigorous & appropriate course selection based on what

we offer at AK (Honors and AP)

      • Grades (GPA)
      • Class Rank (some colleges consider some do not)
      • SAT/ACT test scores (some schools are test optional)
      • Essay responses (not required by all colleges)
      • Extracurricular Involvement with Leadership
      • Community Service
      • Recommendations

DEADLINES

  • Early Decision: Binding decision. If accepted, a student must enroll or lose an enrollment deposit. A student accepted under Early Decision must withdraw all other college apps. Not all colleges offer Early Decision.
  • Early Action: Nonbinding decision. A student may apply early but can apply to other colleges early and make a decision in the Spring.
    • Acceptance rates are usually higher for ED / EA Applicants not because of when they apply but because of the profile of students who decide to apply early.
  • Regular Decision: Nonbinding decision. A student applies with the standard applicant pool.
