Irving Universal & Targeted Strategies

11 of 12

Universal & Targeted Strategies

Goal Area

Strategies

Engagement

Universal Strategy:

  • Teach and utilize discussion and engagement protocols with our students (such as think, pair, share, mini-lessons, Kagan structures, and collaborative learning environment) to foster collaboration and community.

Targeted Strategy & Target Groups (incoming 5th graders):

  • Ensure first trimester team building activities
  • Student leadership opportunities
  • Focus groups facilitated by PBIS and BLT team members

Belonging

Universal Strategy:

All students will make connections with peers and adults by participating in:

  • Daily morning meeting
  • Monthly learning buddies with a partner classroom
  • Eagle’s Nest which are multi-grade level “nests” with about 12 students that met every month with a staff member with lessons designed by the BLT or PBIS team focused on kindness and belonging (through the Nora Project)

Targeted Strategy & Target Groups (incoming 5th graders and student groups receiving behavior referrals):

  • Student leadership opportunities
  • Administration, BLT, and PBIS members will solicit student voice surrounding what kindness and inclusion feels and looks like at Irving School with targeted groups of students
  • Students who are identified in need of additional social emotional support will receive targeted interventions (such as check-in/check-out or a social academic intervention group)

Universal & Targeted Strategies

Goal Area

Strategies

ELA

Universal Strategy:

We will explicitly teach students how to think about reading so they are able to write about reading.

Targeted Strategy & Target Groups (Black & Hispanic Student)::

Our black and brown students will be provided with culturally responsive literature and passages so that they are better able to focus on conventions and written expression.

Math

Universal Strategy:

Students will engage in standards based instruction based on their needs during their WIN through the use of math bins, math talks, problem of the day, manipulatives.

Targeted Strategy & Target Groups (Black and Hispanic students):

During 6 week and trimester MTSS check ins, set aside time to specifically monitor our black and brown students. If they are not making progress then find an appropriate intervention group at that grade level.
