Tips: Reading & Multiple Choice

Reading:

  • Manage your time so that you complete all sections of the test.
  • Read the questions first. Then, read the selection closely.
  • Underline or highlight important information and ideas as you read.
  • Look for links between what you are reading and prior knowledge and experiences you have had.
  • If you are having trouble understanding an idea, either read on until the meaning becomes clearer, or stop and reread.

Multiple Choice:

  • Read the multiple choice questions BEFORE you start reading the article.
  • Highlight keywords in the question for clues of where to find the answers from the reading and what information you are looking for.
  • Eliminate answers you know are wrong.
  • NEVER leave a multiple choice question blank. You have at least a 25% chance of being right!

Tips: Short Writing Task

Short Writing Task:

  • Remember that each question has different requirements of what you must include. Read carefully to ensure you know what to do!
  • Use a focused topic sentence that clearly states your idea and opinion about the topic.
  • When the question asks, you will need to incorporate specific examples from the readings or from your own experience to support your answer. Remember, being specific is better than being vague.
  • Proofread your response to ensure you have answered all parts of the question, and correct any errors you may notice.
  • Try to fill all of the the lines / space provided; do not go over the space limit.
