Things to note!!!

You cannot get credit for the same course twice

    • Human Bio 11 and Bio 11
    • Math at Work 10 and Math 10
    • Music courses at the same grade level

You can not take Chemistry 11/12 or Physics 11/12 if you took Science 10 A/B. This course does not cover the prerequisite topics.

  • Only grade 12’s can take a supervised study.
    • No credit value

  • All Grade 10’s and 11’s must choose eight courses

  • All Grade 12’s must choose a minimum of 7 courses. You must register for a study class on the registration screen. DO NOT choose only 7 classes.

Advanced Courses

  • Any student choosing an Advanced Course should have 85+ in the prerequisite course.

Ex. Math 10 for PreCa11, PreCal11 for PreCal12

  • Both Math 11 and PreCalculus Math 11are required to take PreCalculus Math 12 in Grade 12.

  • If not enough students register for a particular advanced course, all students who registered for this will be placed in the academic level of the course.

Ex. English 11 instead of Advanced English 11

Important Course Changes

  • We now offer an Advanced English 11 course for students with an 80% average in English 10 and an Advanced English 12 course for those students with an 80% in Advanced English 11 or a 90% in English 11.

  • Grade 12 students with an interest in English will have the opportunity to take Canadian Literature 12 next year. This is not a substitute for your grade 12 English credit but may be taken along with it.

  • Grade 11 students will now be permitted to take Biology 12 in their Grade 11 year providing they have successful completed Biology 11 with a mark of 75 or better.

  • Agriculture 11 – (science)
  • History 10 and 11– These courses are for students who enjoy social studies and wish to take an extra History Course.(They do not satisfy the Canadian Content Social Studies requirement)
  • Philosophy 12 – (elective)
  • Math Essentials 12 – (math) All students require 3 math courses (one at each grade level)

Co-op Education 12

  • Coop Education 12 is available for students in Grade 11 or 12 that are not in the O2 program.
  • There is an application process along with an interview process conducted to determine student suitability for the program. Students must be in good standing with their current academic courses and have no issues with absenteeism.
  • This course requires an application form. Selection will take place in April. Any students who are not selected will be asked to choose an alternate course.
  • ***Any students interested in Co-op Education should pick up info. Sheet in Guidance.

Skilled Trades Courses

  • Skilled Trades courses are for students who want to explore the skilled trades as a possible career option.
  • Skilled Trades provide a mixture of theoretical and practical workplace activities using the basic tools of industry professionals
  • Designed to be taught by certified journeypersons.
  • Students receive apprenticeship hours based on time in class under the supervision of a certified journeyperson teacher.
  • Courses offered are Skilled Trades 10, Construction Trades 11and Manufacturing Trades 11.

Registration Process

    • During homeroom block you will be given your personalized registration form. It will have your credits to date on it so that all students are aware of what credits they have and what credits they need. ***Any students who would like to meet with a Guidance Counsellor to discuss course selection should make an appointment immediately.

    • The Glace Bay High School Registration Booklet will be offered online only. Please refer to it at www.cbv.ns.ca/gbhigh

    • Registration appointments must be completed before Friday, April 3rd.

    • Registration is not completed until students enter their courses online. We will let you know when the registration portal is open for your grade. You will have one week to select courses online. You must know your login for Powerschool. A

  • University/College requirements-make sure you check.
  • NSCC – Applications should be submitted in Grade 11. Pick up applications now from Guidance. Transcripts can be sent in September of Grade 12.

**Important to Remember

Once students register on the computer, course selection is final. Students will be unable to change courses except for the following reasons

  • Failure of prerequisite course
  • Course needed for graduation
  • Change in post-secondary or career plans.

**Important to Remember

Any student failing a course in June MUST come to the guidance office on Grading Day to change courses for next year. We may be unable to make the necessary changes in September.

Nova Scotia Virtual School

  • Gives students the opportunity to take courses not offered in their high school setting or that will not fit into their schedule.

  • Some courses available in the Virtual School but not at GBHS include Accounting 12, Advanced Biology 11 and 12, Advanced Chemistry 11 and 12, Advanced Physics 11 and 12, Advanced Global Geography 12, Accounting 12, Tourism 11, Career Development 11/ Workplace Health and Safety 11, Computer Programming 12.

***New next year - Canadian Families 12 and Accounting 12 will only be offered virtually. We will not be offering these at GBHS.
