Transform to Create Belonging

“That’s a different paradigm than expecting people to change themselves in order to fit in. Inclusion requires us to let go of who we are so we can become who we need to be. In other words, inclusion requires transformation.

Why is a sense of belonging important?

  • Belonging precedes achievement
  • “Prioritizing achievement over belonging ends up damaging students’ well-being, overall health, and relationships. It erodes community by elevating individual achievement over human connection” p. 48
  • “Belonging, or being fully human, means more than having access. Belonging entails being respected at a basic level that includes the right to both co-create and make demands on society.” John A. Powell

Guiding Principles of Cultural Proficiency

  • Diversity within cultures is vast and significant.
  • Each individual and each group has unique cultural values and needs.
  • School systems must recognize that marginalized populations have to be at least bicultural and that this status creates a unique set of issues to which the system must be equipped to respond.
  • Inherent in cross-cultural interaction are dynamics that must be acknowledged, adjusted to, and accepted.

When we don’t keep the guiding principles in mind, we decide who is in vs. who is out, who belongs vs. who doesn’t.
