Sample Workshop – Self Care 101

10

11 of 32

How are YOU doing?

It’s been one of the most challenging times in the history of time, take a minute to check in with yourself. Journal your response to these questions: (Be honest to yourself. Its ok to feel one or more emotions.)

  1. How am I feeling today?
  2. Were there any difficult moments I needed to get through in the past year?
  3. What was something that brought me joy?

11

12 of 32

What does self care look like for you?

Please take a moment and share with your elbow partner (or in a virtual space, breakout room partner).

  • What does self care mean to you?
  • What are the different ways you self care?
  • If you could add one thing to help yourself rest and replenish what would it be?

12

13 of 32

Why is it Important to Self Care?

  • With so much going on in today's society, it's easy to get lost in the swing of things.
  • When we don't take time to care for ourselves, it can have a a big impact on our health.
  • It's one of the best ways to manage stress and anxiety.

Ideas for Self Care

Pick the one that calls to you. https://www.simplyquinoa.com/why-self-care-is-important-101-self-care-ideas/

Example for me:

  • Grounding. As a single mom, with special needs children, I need to take care of basic needs for me.(Brush your teeth, take a bath. Change clothes)
  • Meditation and or Pray. Take a moment to connect to nature (even in the inner City :). Under remote learning, I brought nature in.
  • Affirmations - a quote, sayings or a song that uplifts you. Example: https://youtu.be/tu0lNcrZjG8
  • Say out loud or write 5 things you like about yourself.

Sample Workshop - What is a Healing Centered School?

15

16 of 32

What is a Healing-Centered School?

  • Recognizes that trauma is systemic and happens both in school and outside of school
  • Educates the school community about how trauma impacts learning, including training for staff on trauma-responsive educational practices
  • Invests in the leadership of students, parents, and front-line staff to decide what needs to change to create a school environment that supports healing
  • Develops a school-wide Healing-Centered Plan to remove harmful practices, like metal detectors and punitive response to behavior, and adopt healing-centered practices. Examples include:
    • Supportive responses to behavior, including mindfulness techniques, suspension diversion programs, and mental health supports
    • Building supportive teacher-student relationships through morning check-ins or student-staff mentorship programs
    • Staff wellness programs
    • Investment in student voice

16

17 of 32

How do we build one?

  • Identify a group of students (if age-appropriate), parents, and staff who are passionate about healing to lead a Transformation Team
  • Conduct town halls & school discussions to assess what our school is doing well and what needs to change to support healing
  • With the support of our administrators, create a Healing-Centered Plan to begin removing school practices that interfere with healing and building trauma-responsive practices
  • Use surveys and town halls to assess progress throughout the year

17

18 of 32

How do we get folks involved?

  • Talk to like-minded school community members
    • Other parents like US!
    • Staff who took the TREP training
  • Form a Transformation Team to
    • Host discussions about what we need to change to create a more supportive environment in our school
    • Help us learn about trauma-responsive practices
  • Get as much input from our community as possible
    • Surveys!
    • Host discussions after other school events, like helpful workshops for parents or fun activities for families

18

19 of 32

Once we get them there, how to community build?

  • Listen to their concerns
    • What about our school environment is not working?
    • What change do they want to see?
  • Uplift their ideas
    • How can we improve student and parent engagement?
    • What ideas do they have for changes to school practices, policies, and community-building strategies?
  • Include their goals and ideas in our Healing-Centered Plan
    • Our plan for change is most likely to succeed when our students, parents, and staff see themselves reflected in it!

What did you learn from your partners?

  • What different countries represented?
  • Each person has a cultural identity which is a part of them.
  • Today, we will think about who we are, where we come from and all the ways our community heals.

22

In my culture, we clear the space of any negative energy or bad wishes other may have with something called, “Esphand.”

23

Diverse Healing PracticesExample – “Esphand”

Diverse Healing PracticesExample - Tai Chi

The meditation exercises tai chi and qigong (“discipline of the vital breath”) are examples of traditional Chinese healing that have been incorporated into health and fitness programs to complement modern medicine.

Healing Practices: From Everywhere

1. What does your family do when someone is not feeling well physically?

2. Is there anything folks do when you’re not feeling well emotionally?

Think, pair, share

De-Stigmatizing Mental Health

How do you talk with your community about trauma and healing?

Be personable – you are the “Healing” Ambassador. Making yourself and the material approachable. It goes a long way.

Be real – it’s okay to call out that this is a culture shift. Many of us were not taught to engage our feelings, particularly around stress. You are not a “whiner” for having big feelings.

Be curious – listen with openness and curiosity. Everyone is in a different place on their healing journey. Meet folks where they are at.

26

The WHAT

It will be up to you and your school community to build a workshop that serves your parents best.

  1. The workshop can be any length but we recommend at least 45 minutes.
  2. It can be virtual or in person depending on regulations for in person sessions and your school’s preference.
  3. More information to come!
