Program Sponsor

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (Commission) accredits institutions and approves programs that meet its adopted standards of quality and effectiveness. These programs span across all credential areas and include subject matter programs, educator preparation programs and educator induction programs. Prospective candidates may enroll in Commission-approved institutions that offer approved programs to earn a credential or authorization to serve in California's public schools.

Designated Subjects - CTE Teaching Credential

The Preliminary Designated Subjects CTE

Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to:

Teach in the subject or subjects named on the

credential in grades twelve and below and in

classes organized primarily for adults, in career

technical, trade or vocational courses.

Requirement for Three-Year Preliminary Credential

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Certificate of Clearance (COC)

Complete Live Scan receipt verifying fingerprints have been taken and fees have been paid, unless fingerprint clearance is on file with the CTC

Recommendation by an approved Program Sponsor

Three Years of Full-Time work Experience

One Year = 1000 hours

Possess a diploma based on passage of the GED test or possess the foreign equivalent of a high school diploma

Substitutions/alternatives may be used for up to 2 years of work experience, but at least 1 year (1,000 hours) MUST be actual work experience in the industry sector.

Course Defined

A course in career technical education means a course in a district-operated CTE program that is aligned to the CTE model curriculum standards and framework adopted by the state board

Assignment Option in Regulations

Holders of Single Subject Teaching Credentials in agriculture, business, home economics, industrial arts, and industrial technology education are also authorized to teach trade, technical, career or vocational classes

National Board Certification

Teachers who are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards may apply directly to the Commission for a Clear teaching Credential by submitting:

  • Photocopy of National Board Certification
  • Completed application (form 41-4)
  • Appropriate application processing fee

What about Career Exploration Courses?

These courses must focus on the Standards for Career Ready Practice.

They must have wheels, stations or modules that focus on multiple industry sectors

If you are teaching a class that focuses on one industry sector or is part of a CTE pathway you must have the appropriate CTE credential to teach the class

Alternative method for meeting high school graduation requirements

Education Code 51225.3(b)

“The governing board, with the active involvement of parents, administrators, teachers, and pupils, shall adopt alternative means for students to complete the prescribed course of study which may include practical demonstration of skills and competencies, supervised work experience or other outside work experience, career technical education courses in high schools, courses offered by regional occupational centers or programs, interdisciplinary study…”

Appropriate credential and authorization

If a class is a CTE based class and the school district has a policy that allows granting graduation credits to the class per EC Section 51225.3(b), then it may be taught by the holder of a credential authorizing the teaching of CTE in the specified industry sector.

Designated Subjects - CTE Teaching Credential

The Clear Designated Subjects CTE Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to:

Teach in the subject or subjects named on the credential in grades twelve and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, including services to English learners in Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) in career technical, trade or vocational courses.
