  • The Field Marshal is responsible for the field of play at the venue they serve. He/She will make sure that all fields are properly marked with field numbers tightly attached to the side netting of a goal at each end of the field, put out corner flags, ensure goals are properly weighted, and confirm field conditions are acceptable to play on, and that field lining is visible and complete.
  • Field Marshals are the highest-ranking tournament official on site at any particular venue with regard to decisions outside of game play; although they may not overrule decisions made by the referee. Conflicts arising with coaches, parents, and participants are typically directed to the FM. Listening to the concerns and complaints, and directing those involved to the correct outlet is typically all that is needed.

*Referees*

10 of 19

  • Ref fills out game card with team scores and any red/yellow cards. Red/yellow cards are tracked by jersey # and/or name (or Coach)
  • Ref enters score & cards into GotSport and adds any red card info into a google form so that we can see it at Headquarters in real time.
  • Referee also records the score and enters any cards into GotSport
  • When a RED card is reported, Brad & Alex look to see when that team’s next game is and if it is the next day, records on the next game card which player must sit out. If the next game is the same day, Brad communicates the necessary information (Venue, Field #, Time, Team, Player #, Game #) directly to the referee. If the referee is unavailable, he may call the Field Marshal at the appropriate location. The Field Marshal then contacts the refs on site and makes sure the suspended player information gets to the proper game card.

*Scoring is handled by the Referees, Not the FMs*

*HOWEVER, FMs May Have a Role with Red & Yellow Cards*

11 of 19

  • Director of Game Ops, Pete Dunmire, will be monitoring GotSport and if an accumulation of yellow cards requiring a player to sit out occurs (3 consecutive games with a yellow card), Pete will contact Headquarters to work with Brad to get the information to the Field Marshal and Refs.
  • Wrong Score complaints should be directed to parkcityextremecup.com where they will find a link to report wrong scores through a google form
  • Field Marshals may contact Michelle at Tournament HeadQuarters at 801.915.0384 or Cora Reddan Tournament Director 801.831.1219 for Scoring or Red Card concerns

  • There is specific scoring for each bracket to determine advancement. - Scoring explanation for bracket advancement is on the PCEC website - Scoring is based on the number of teams in the brackets - Scoring for bracket advancement is done primarily by computer
  • GotSport figures out the scoring for advancement based on the tournament criteria entered into the system.
  • Be familiar with the system - but forward any question/dispute to Tournament Communications Center or Director of Game Operations, Pete Dunmire
  • The FM cannot overturn the Bracket Scoring -- Any change in teams or bracket scoring has to be done by the Director of Game Operations or the Tournament Rules Committee

*Brackets: Its helpful for FMs to Understand Scoring*

13 of 19

  • A Referee may suspend, truncate or delay an individual game because of weather related issues -- most likely lightening
  • A FM cannot cancel, suspend or truncate individual games
  • However, when one Referee at a venue makes a determination to suspend one game due to weather – that decision must then apply to all games at the entire venue - It is the responsibility of the Field Marshal to alert all other fields of the suspension - The FM should notify the other referees and spectators immediately by use of the blowhorn in the Venue Coordinator’s Bin
  • Rescheduling of games will be up to the Tournament Committee - See detailed weather policy at the end of this presentation

*REFEREES HAVE CONTROL OVER INDIVIDUAL GAMES, THE FIELD MARSHAL HAS CONTROL OVER THE VENUE*

*Lightning*

  • Monitor local weather and thunderstorm conditions. Subscribe to a weather alert service or use a lightning strike app such as Blitzortung Lightning Tracker OR Weather Bug to see what’s happening in real time.

  • Keep an eye on the sky. Look for darkening skies, flashes of lightning, or increasing wind, which may be signs of an approaching thunderstorm.

  • Listen for the sound of thunder. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to pose an immediate threat. Don't wait for rain as lightning can travel up to 10 miles and strike far away from any rainfall.

  • If you feel your hair standing on end, and/or hear "crackling noises", you are in lightning's electric field and are in IMMEDIATE danger.

  • Flash to Bang – This method is used to assess how far away lightning is striking. Count the number of seconds between a lightning flash and the corresponding thunder. The number of seconds divided by 5 is the distance in miles to the lightning strike. Generally, a 30-second (6 mile) flash-to-bang count suggests evacuation of the area.

*Medical FIELD MARSHALS DO NOT MAKE MEDICAL DECISIONS*

  • A Concussion Sticker is on each team’s official roster
  • If a player is sent off the field for suspicion of a head injury, they will be seen by the trainer. A representative from the team will need to bring the tournament roster to the trainer for them to sign off on before the player can be released
  • If for some reason, the tournament roster cannot be located at that time (someone left with it, etc.), the trainer will complete a report and send a photo of it to Headquarters before releasing the player. A volunteer at Headquarters will then notify the team that they will need to stop by Headquarters before their next game to have the report added to their roster
  • Headquarters will keep a log of the trainer reports that come to them to be sure one team is not repeatedly having their players not signed off on by the trainers after an injury
  • If the trainer determines that the player has a concussion, or requires a doctor visit, a doctor’s note must accompany the tournament roster for any other game the player plays in
  • Hopefully by keeping this information all in one place, the trainers will be able to see the injury history for the players and be better able to assess any damage

*REFER ALL MEDICAL QUESTIONS TO THE MEDICAL STAFF AT EACH VENUE*

*Misconduct*

  • Conduct enforcement, as it relates to games, is up to the Referee
  • Field Marshals support all decisions of the Referee
  • Field Marshals may need to diffuse volatile situations among spectators
  • Keep notes on any serious situations—fill out a conduct report—take a picture of it and send to Cora at Tournament Headquarters

*ALWAYS USE GOOD JUDGEMENT AND KEEP YOUR COOL*

*Miscellaneous*

  • Golf Cart Use: There are a limited number of golf carts at each venue. They are rented at great expense out of necessity: moving equipment around venues, for medical trainers to reach players quickly, to deliver meals or messages, for FMs to get to games quickly, and to haul trash and recycling. They are needed by too many people and are too expensive to be a lawn chair for Field Marshals. Please plan to share venue golf carts and be aware of other needs and uses. Feel free to bring your own chair or even a bike.
  • Lunch or Dinner: Should your shift occur during lunch or dinner the tournament will provide you with a meal. Free water is provided at each venue and you are also welcome to a Dasani canned water and Liquid IV from concessions during your shift.

Weather / Lightening Protocol

The following Protocol policy was sent to all teams participating in the Extreme Cup on July 24, 2024:

It appears very likely that weather is going to adversely impact the tournament this year and everyone needs to be ready for this and patient when it happens.  Please know that referees and tournament staff will be doing everything possible to deal with situations safely and fairly.

Weather / Lightning Protocol

  1. Game Stoppage: The responsibility of game stoppage rests solely with the Field Referee.  In the event that a Referee stops play at a venue for dangerous weather, all games at that venue shall be stopped.  Tournament officials shall uphold and communicate Referee decisions to others at the venue as needed.
  2. Immediate Action: Everyone at an affected venue MUST immediately seek safe shelter, however Teams, Referees, and Tournament Officials MUST NOT leave the venue.
  3. SAFE shelter areas include:  a) Substantial buildings, b) Fully enclosed metal vehicles with windows up.
  4. UNSAFE shelter areas:  AVOID all metal objects such as fences, gates, light poles, bleachers, pavilions, golf carts, playground equipment, etc. Don't hold on to metal items or lean against vehicles. Large metal objects can conduct lightning. Small metal objects can cause burns. AVOID trees, water, open fields, and high ground. Don’t stand in water, even with rubber boots.
  5. Game Resumption: A suspended game will be restarted when it's safe to do so.  This may be soon after it was stopped or more than an hour later.  Teams must not leave the vicinity of the venue and must be ready for play to resume at any time.  If a team is not ready to play when play is resumed, they will forfeit that game.
  6. Shortened Games: Games that have been stopped or delayed and cannot finish within their designated timeframe will be shortened as needed in order to resume the original schedule.  Games will not be shortened by more than 50% of their scheduled full time but may be considered complete if at least that amount has been played.  Shortened halves will be played an equal length whenever possible but the primary objective is always to get every game played, shortened or not.
  7. Cancelled Games: Canceling or rescheduling a game will ALWAYS be a last resort and priority will be given to delaying and/or shortening games instead.  The decision to cancel or reschedule any game will be at the sole discretion of the Tournament Committee and there will be no refunds.  In extreme cases, games may be rescheduled and decided by Taking of Kicks from the Penalty Mark.

Thank you,

Park City Tournament Committee
