Succor Lumbar Support

A customized solution your back needs so that you can work like you have never before.

  • Need statement: A hardworking person who works a lot from desk needs to feel comfortable without much pain because they must have utmost focus on the work.

  • This product gives the users the option to have that customizability in hand, the entire support will be customized to your back structure only.

3

  • Detailed Description: The product is a support for your back in the shape of your spine. This allows you to maintain that natural curvature of your spine and reduce the pain people experience due to long hours of sitting.
  • What's the need for AM?
  • Conventional Mfg processes can’t match the mass customization needs.
  • All kinds of spine shapes could be accommodated for customization, along with pressure points.
  • Faster production and will help doctors to make detailed design according to individual instead of relying on standard supports.

Features and Functions

4

  • Shape of the support: Copy of your spine, helps your spine to maintain the natural curvature.
  • Protrusions in shape of beads: The small protrusions are based on pressure points and when rested upon relieve the pain from key locations.
  • Double slits: The slits provide space for the belts to go through, which helps in putting the support in place on the chair.
  • Foldable Clips: Helps in keeping the chair in position which have a relatively open design.

Comparison with standard product

  • My support
  • Is made specific to your back type and shape.
  • Has the pressure point bumps to ease with the pain.
  • All our back supports come with high quality straps with good length to attach to chair and have that height adjustment.
  • You do see foldable clips on our product, don’t you!
  • Our product will retain its shape even after long time.

  • Standard Support
  • Is not made specifically to your back type and shape.
  • It does not have pressure point bumps to relieve you of that pain.
  • Most supports don’t come with belts or good quality belts with enough length for attachments, and height adjustments.
  • You don’t see foldable clips to attach to the chair, do you?
  • Overtime the support loses its original shape

Product Engineering

  • Design analysis:
  • Material : PLA
  • Stress analysis: 2.37MPa
  • Displacement: 1.8mm
  • Force: 203.73N (for 80Kgs person on chair)
  • The entire process of mass customization would start like this:
  • 3D scanning of back
  • The support would be designed using the 3D scan, with inputs from a doctor (Optional)
  • Depending on the complexity the time would vary.
  • Print and assemble with the accessories.
  • The product only has one complex geometry which is the basic shape.
  • Some spines are symmetrical and some asymmetrical in curvature, and 3D scanning helps in achieving the accurate curvature for designing.

Appendix

  • Need statement: A hardworking person who works a lot from desk needs to feel comfortable without much pain because they must have utmost focus on the work.

  • Process of need statement development:
  • Started with opportunity generation.
  • Filtered out ideas
  • Gained feedback on ideas.
  • Focused on one product, and asked what factors led to pain they experienced.
  • Main factors: Long hours of sitting, Desk job, High stress job, uncomfortable chairs etc.
  • These factors led to need statement.

Collaborate with doctors to create design for the customers.

  • HMW statements
  • Summary: Started off with goal of making something to deal with any kind of discomfort. Then interviewed a few people about general discomfort they faced during their life and started the opportunity generation. Asked for feedback on my ideas and most positive response was for back support and that’s what I worked on.
