Overview

  • I want to share about three “global” events-initiatives happening around the time of our special GIN Virtual Café on 9 December 2023. Short summaries are below and click the links to learn more.

  • I do not think most folks are aware of these three global events-initiatives and frankly they may have minimal interest in them. But some will! And nonetheless, I think it is good for people in integrity and anti-corruption work like in GIN to continue to be aware of and for some be engaged in the larger global context and link to it (at least in an informational way)--while maintaining and as a way to support your distinctives and purposes.

  • I have also added additional core “global resources” at the end—about global efforts for integrity and anti-corruption.

Definitions of integrity and corruption are below in the notes.

EVENT 1 (annual)--9 December 2023--International Anti-Corruption Day

Theme--Uniting the World Against Corruption for Development, Peace, and Security. This special day (and the events leading up to it and following it) builds on the theme from last year 2022 "Uniting the World Against Corruption". Both annual days emphasize and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention Against Corruption (2023). Theme--

“The 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) seeks to highlight the crucial link between anti-corruption and peace, security, and development. At its core is the notion that tackling this crime is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and the involvement of each and every person and institution can we overcome the negative impact of this crime. States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth, alike, all have a role to play in uniting the world against corruption.

The 2023 IACD commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the positive changes brought about by the collective efforts driven by the Convention. Equally crucial is our examination of the remaining gaps that require attention to ensure that this mechanism continues to strengthen in the years ahead.”

EVENT 2 (annual)--10 December 2023--Human Rights Day

Theme--Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All

  • “In the decades since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [UNDHR] in 1948, human rights have become more recognised and more guaranteed across the globe. The UDHR has since served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protection that today focuses also on vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants. However, the promise of the UDHR, of dignity and equality in rights, has been under a sustained assault in recent years. As the world faces challenges new and ongoing – pandemics, conflicts, exploding inequalities, morally bankrupt global financial system, racism, climate change – the values, and rights enshrined in the UDHR provide guideposts for our collective actions that do not leave anyone behind.

  • The year-long Human Rights 75 initiative seeks to shift the needle of understanding and action towards greater knowledge of the universality of the UDHR and the activism associated with it.”

  • Note from Kelly—human rights defenders are on the forefront of the fight against corruption and against the many ways that people-planet are being exploited. For more info see UN Human Rights—Office of the High Commissioner and the UN Awake at Night podcasts.

EVENT 3 (every two years—now in its 10th session)

11-15 December 2023--Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption

“The Conference of the States Parties (COSP) is the main policymaking body of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. It supports States parties and signatories in their implementation of the Convention, and gives policy guidance to UNODC to develop and implement anti-corruption activities.

The Conference was established, as per article 63 of the Convention:

  • To improve the capacity of States to implement the Convention;
  • To enhance cooperation among States in achieving the objectives of the Convention; and
  • To promote and review the implementation of the Convention.

The Conference meets every two years and adopts resolutions and decisions in furtherance of its mandate.”

  • Global Integrity Day (GID) is positive day, launched on 9 June 2020, to reflect, teach, and collaborate on ways to integrate integrity in all we do throughout the entire year.

  • GID is a strategic day to promote a) cultivating lifestyles, cultures, and systems of integrity from the individual through the international levels; b) joining together to understand and address the causes and consequences of corruption in its many forms; and c) working towards just and equitable societies marked with wellbeing for all people and for the planet.
