Quote of the Day

Introduce a quote relevant to what your students are learning or to a shared experience.

Ideas:

  • Simply post in your classroom or in a daily check-in.
  • Facilitate a whole-class discussion and/or group students

into pairs.

  • Have each student share a one-word response

to the quote.

  • Lead a quick philosophical chair discussion/debate.

Appreciation, Apology, Aha!

At the end of the day, challenge your students share in their groups something they appreciate, want to apologize for, or something they learned.

Examples:

  • I would like to appreciate Brenda for facilitating the conversation in our small group.
  • I apologize to everyone for having my headphones in for half of the time.
  • Today, I learned how to add and subtract integers.

Behavior Form

Use a “Student Behavior Form” to help students reflect on behaviors that occur in class.

Have a follow up conversation with the students to understand the behavior and see if they have learned how their behavior affected the other students in the class.

Circle Norms

When participating in restorative circles, all participants will:

  • Talk only when they have the talking piece.
  • Pass the talking piece in a circle, say “thank you” when they receive it.
  • Understand that it is okay to “pass”.

Restorative Practice Participants

Restorative practice involves three parties:

20

The Victim

The Offender

The Community

Who was harmed?

Who did the harm?

Where did it take place?

Let’s Try it Out! (Reactive)

  • What has happened?
  • Who has been affected?
  • What do you need to do to make things right?
