HAM OPERATOR DUTIES

  • HAM Radio Operators utilize HAM Radios to communicate throughout the Bike MS Route. HAM Radio Operators are stationed at the main site in Net Control and out on the route at rest stops to effectively communicate any information or issues that may arise on the route.
  • HAM Radio Operators are expected to arrive on time and set up/tear down their equipment, work well with other volunteers, and act in a professional manner. HAM Radio Operators will be a vital part of communication between volunteers, staff, and participants throughout the event. Whether a volunteer is in Net Control or at a rest stop a tent, table, and chairs will be provided for HAM Radio Operators to set up their equipment.  
  • Check in with Home Base Command Center by HAM Radio when you arrive at your post.

VANS- PICK UP/DROP OFF

Pick Up

    • Driver should pick up van on Friday, May 5, 2023, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 pm at Capps Vans.

    • Will need Driver’s License to pick up.
    • Inspection & gas level
    • You can park your vehicle at Capps.

VANS-PICKUP/DROP OFF

Drop Off

    • Sunday after event or Monday by noon
    • Same level of gas
    • Make sure everything is out
    • Wash windows before returning if possible
    • There is a key drop at the front

Each van will have box, binder & magnet at pick up

VANS-DECORATING�THEME: MARVEL VS. DC

Strongly encouraged to decorate your van!

    • Window paint

GAS

  • Drivers will be provided a WIX card that will be good at 400+ gas stations
  • Turn in receipts at the end of the event to Liz
  • If you have any issues, call Liz – 817-706-2167

SAG PROCEDURE

Cyclist should have their helmet off to indicate they need assistance

Pull over on the shoulder PAST the cyclist

    • Watch for other cyclists!
    • Get as far over as possible without getting stuck, etc.
    • If you see a driveway ahead, use that instead of the shoulder

If bike won’t fit (i.e. tandem, recumbent, etc.), call Net Control for assistance.

Drop cyclist and bike at next break point

    • Cannot go back to last break point
    • Cannot keep riding with you to next break point
      • If he/she is done for day, they need to get ride on the next SAG moving forward or express from lunch.

SAG COMMUNICATIONS

It is very important that we stay connected with all SAG vehicles

RIDERLESS BIKES

If you take a bike without a rider �(i.e. accident, inclement weather, etc.)

    • Fill out orange Riderless Bike form (aka Toe Tag)
    • Attach to bike
    • Give copy to cyclist if possible

Meet at 5:45 AM

    • Location – TBA

Brief meeting around 6:15 AM

Most vans will be on the road at 6:45 AM

Ride starts at 7:00 AM

SCHEDULE

Be flexible! Things could change at any moment!

Work your Zone!

    • Refer to schedule for your starting point
    • Loop between starting point and next point
    • Keep looping until schedule says to move forward or instructed otherwise

Be prepared to jump ahead on schedule if needed

    • We follow the speed of the ride

Don’t have to stay in order, etc.

Meals

    • Lunches – No lunch “break” is scheduled.
    • A boxed lunch can be picked up after 11:00 a.m. at Rest Stop5- Firehouse Subs

Stay at finish until all vans come in

  • Conga Line with vans and other support vehicles at finish
  • Not mandatory, but it is nice!

Weather

    • Be flexible and listen for instructions
    • If sweeping the route, take cyclists directly to finish
    • Take cover if necessary

No drinking on the job (If you are wearing your MS shirt, you are on the job)

Reset trip odometer at each break point

Watch for cyclists

    • In front
    • Behind (drafting)

    • Bungees

MISCELLANEOUS CONT.

Personal SAGs

    • Not allowed on course
    • Given off-course maps to break points
    • If you see one, report it to Net Control
      • This is not a high priority, so be patient

Don’t forget

    • Sunscreen
    • Insect repellant
    • Bungee cords
    • Bicycle Tire Pump, if you have one
    • Coolers: Ice & water provided Saturday at the start
    • Pick up snacks at rest stops
