Unit 5

Equations for Functions

Functions and Volume

Lesson 3

8.F.A: Define, evaluate, and compare functions.

8.F.A.1: Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.

Let’s find outputs from equations.

Unit 5 ā— Lesson 3

We will be able to find the output of a function when we know the input so that we can name the independent and dependent variables for a given function and represent the function with an equation.

Equations for Functions

I can find the output of a function when I know the input.

We can write A = s², where s is the independent variable and A is the dependent variable.

If we knew the number of dimes and wanted to know the number of nickels, it would be useful to rewrite the equation so it looked like n = -2d + 100
