JSA Teacher Recruitment Guide

Expansion Department

Multiple The Number of Sponsors

  • 1 for meetings, 1 for conventions
  • Make it clear to teachers in a friendly manner that the TA role doesn’t have to be a solo work as students can help whenever possible & that there can be other teachers & parent chaperones to help out at meetings and/or conventions!

Multiple The Number of Sponsors

  • Consider asking teachers from different departments for more flexibility so that if one department requires appointments in overlap with a JSA meeting for instance, the other sponsor could offer a place to meet

Emphasize how JSA is

student-led

  • The nature of JSA is to empower students in leadership & thus, teachers can realize how they can have less work in their busy schedules by letting students lead meetings.

  • Of course, they’ll still need to chaperone, ensure this is conformity to district/school policies, & be there for state conventions (unless parent volunteers can step in), but at least their workload isn’t burdensome from a lack of limits!

Emphasize how JSA is worth the commitment

  • JSA has and will continue to offer students opportunities to be leaders in the future who are involved in their society and government via:
    • informative debates on national issues
    • conventions where networking with politicians can be made
    • activism works to take action against social injustice, and much more that we could list all day!
    • Thus, this could appeal to teachers who have interests in social studies, persuasion, leadership, community service, & more!

JSA is more than debate

  • Though debates are a big aspect in being involved in JSA, there are so many different aspects other than debate
  • JSA aims for students to become involved in their political community with activism, leadership, and teamwork

- By joining JSA cabinet, students can learn what it’s like to work on initiatives on their own and learn from their peers across their state

- Students can also run for state positions and learn how to connect with others that share the same passion

Social Studies & English teacher recommendations

  • The norm around JSA is the subject in which our TA’s teach is usually English or Social Studies. We recommend all teachers but these specific subjects correlate with what we do in JSA.
  • Other subjects to keep in mind are Government teachers, you’re favorite teacher, Science teachers, Debate teachers, and so many more!
