MEASURMENT OF CYLINDER BORE -

  • Measure liner at points 1-a; record the measurement. Then move 90 degrees from first measurement and measure at point 1-b; record the measurement. Subtract the smallest measurement from the largest to calculate out-of-roundness at point 1.

HOW IS CYLINDER BORE MEASURED -

You'll need to set up a micrometer and use a telescoping gauge to transfer the inside diameter of the cylinder to the micrometer where you can actually measure it. An even better option is to use a bore gauge. Once set, this spring-loaded tool can make the process much faster and every bit as accurate.

HOW DO YOU SET A BORE MICROMETER

  • Setting a dial bore gauge is a simple concept
  • Set a micrometer to the size bore you will be testing.
  • Set up the dial bore gauge with the extensions necessary for the bore diameter.
  • Place the bore gauge between the micrometer's spindle and anvil.
  • Rock the dial bore gauge back and forth and side to side in the micrometer.

HOW ACCURATE IS A BORE MICROMITER -

  • 0.002 inches
  • When using a micrometer to set a dial bore gauge, the accuracy of the measurement will be 0.002 inches or 0.0508 millimeters.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE ACCURATELY WITH A MICROMITER

  • Follow This Simple Four-Step Process to read MICROMETERs:
  • STEP 1: Read the sleeve measurement.
  • STEP 2: Next, read the thimble measurement.
  • STEP 3: Now read the vernier. The vernier will provide the ten-thousandths place of your decimal measurement.
  • STEP 4: Finally, add it up!
