How to Find A Book on the Shelf

Step 1: Open the Library Catalogue

Go to https://eit.hdsb.ca/ or go to your school Library website, under Library Links.

Select: School Library Catalogues Select: Your School Name

Step 2: Login

  • Select the Login button on the top right corner of the Library Catalogue.
  • Sign in with your HDSB Email and Password

Step 3: Search For A Book

  • Type in the Search Bar what you are looking for and Select the Blue Magnifying Glass.
    • You may also browse the New and Popular books shown on the screen.

Step 4: Find A Book

  • Select the book that you are interested in.

Understanding Call Numbers (No.)

  • Books are organized either alphabetically (by author name) or numerically (by subject and author name).
  • For example, Non-Fiction & Primary Non-Fiction books will be organized numerically.
    • This is organized by the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Books in these categories have numbers that represent a certain subject.
  • Check out the image below, to see what subjects you can find under which numbers:

  • Some books are organized by alphabetical order.
  • Looking for picture books, graphic novels, or chapter books.
  • These are books that are organized by the author’s last name.
  • For example, readers, picture books, graphic novels, and fiction books will be organized alphabetically.
    • These books might look something like this:

Step 5: Location

  • Look at the Location on the right hand side of the page circled in yellow.
  • Write down the Call Number (Call No).
  • Including numbers and letters (if there are any).
    • Ex. Call No. is 636.7 FOR
    • Location: Non-Fiction
  • Status: means if the book is currently In or Out of the Library.
    • Sometimes there is more than 1 copy of a book, so check to see if there is an extra currently in the Library.

Step 6: Find the Book On the Shelf

  • Please grab a Shelf Marker, if your Library has one.
  • Find the Location in your Library of where the book is.
    • For example (your book is in the Graphic Novel Location).
    • Call No. is GNOV F KRO
    • Title: Jedi Academy
  • Insert your Shelf Marker into the spot of the book.
    • Pull your book out from the shelf.
  • If you like your book, please sign it out at the Circulation Desk.
  • If you do not want it, put the book back in the spot you have your Shelf Marker.
  • Return your Shelf Marker at the desk, and enjoy your book!
