MATTHEW 19

And Pharisees came up to him (Jesus) and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?”

MATTHEW 19

4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

6 of 26

MATTHEW 19

6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Malachi 2 (NASB)

13 “This is another thing you do: you cover the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and with groaning, because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 Yet you say, ‘For what reason?’ Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 But not one has done so who has a remnant of the Spirit. And what did that one do while he was seeking a godly offspring? Take heed then to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of your youth. 16 For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the Lord of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.”

Deuteronomy 24

1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man's wife,

Deuteronomy 24

3 and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord.

INDECENCY

from H6168; nudity, literally or figuratively (disgrace, blemish):—nakedness, shame, unclean(-ness).

Matthew 19

What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “BECAUSE OF YOUR HARDNESS OF HEART MOSES ALLOWED YOU TO DIVORCE YOUR WIVES, but from the beginning it was not so.

12 of 26

God joined the man and his wife together. I have no right and they have no right to separate it. God is never happy with divorce. He still hates it. Don’t get divorced.

13 of 26

When our hearts get hardened towards each other and towards God, we will continue to choose divorce.

14 of 26

It’s our hard hearts that make us quit marriage, not the curse or sin. The curse and sin make marriage difficult and require you both to sacrifice and grow.

15 of 26

Reminder: Your life on earth is not supposed to always be comfortable or easy. It has a purpose given to us by our creator, God. Growing can hurt at times.

What are the “biblical grounds” for divorce?

17 of 26

MATTHEW 19

What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate….8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality (fornication/ porneia), and marries another, commits adultery.”

18 of 26

JESUS WAS DEALING WHAT WHAT IS, NOT HIDING BEHIND SOME IDEAL REALITY

You should not get divorced, because you know the God who can bring dead things back to life. You cannot say what is dead or what is alive. He joined you and He says when it is done.

19 of 26

Because you and your spouse don’t see clearly, or hear correctly, you may be overcome by the difficulty of your circumstances and choose to harden your heart and quit your marriage. Or to fracture your union by committing adultery.

20 of 26

The cultural standard is that you are welcome to divorce for whatever reason, but if you leave for any other reason than adultery, and find a new partner to marry your sexual union will be adultery.

But what about ……….?

22 of 26

MATTHEW 19:10-12

10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”

23 of 26

MATTHEW 19:10-12

11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 1 Cor 7

But what about ……….?

25 of 26

1 CORINTHIANS 7:15

15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace.
