THE CUNY GSE ENCAMPMENT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SPACE FULL OF LOVE, CARE AND CELEBRATION OF SOLIDARITY !

Our encampment welcomed everyone who aligned with our points of unity, the Five Demands, and abided by the community agreements.

Elements of the encampment included:

  • Collective clean-ups every morning, evening and several times throughout the day
  • The inclusion of children and pets, with art activities and sing-alongs.
  • Neighborhood support → Uptown and NY community members brought bags of groceries, expressing their pride in the student resistance and outreach within NY.

The CUNY administration shut down access to the campus bathrooms. That has been a repeated administrative tactic used against Encampments for Gaza, drawing a parallel to the IOF’s restriction of resources in Palestine.

The local restaurants and cafes opened their doors to us! In particular, a local cafe, corners shop and ice cream shop welcomed our community with open arms. → The disparity in treatment between our community's local businesses vs. the administration was stark—reflecting larger themes of the state’s resource restrictions and fascist decisions.

“We Keep Each Other Safe” (pro-Palestinian student chant)

  • Students in the Gaza encampments of Columbia, The City College, FIT, The New School, NYU, Fordham College and more have rallied, marched and looked out for each other
  • From late night jaily support to early morning supply calls, from daily mental health support to medical aid– the students have followed in the footsteps of Palestinians.
  • For we are all Palestinian, we are all Congolese, we are all Sudanese.
  • Oppression for one is oppression for all. We the People MUST keep each other safe in our resistance against settler colonial, apartheid regimes.

At the CUNY GSE, CUNY community members from all generations, including students, elders and many children, came together in the encampment to collectively plan for a world free of oppression.

Encampment activities included daily people’s assemblies, live music, art builds, poetry readings, children's craft workshops, film screenings and political education teach-ins on topics ranging from the history of the Puerto Rican and Black liberation struggles to the Filipino people’s movement against fascist state repression and US imperialism, the history of the Palestinian liberation movement, COINTELPRO and more.

We were honored to receive a call from the political prisoner and former Black Panther Mumia Abu Jamal. Calling in from the Pennsylvania State Correctional Facility, SCI-Mahoney, where he has been incarcerated since 1982, Mumia Abu Jamal spoke to protestors on the historic nature of the unfolding student movement and our imperative to cease the occupation of Palestine.

The GSE participants also established a Peoples’ Library named after Refaat Alareer, the prominent Palestinian professor and writer who was martyred by zionist forces in Gaza in December 2023.
