Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the Award Ceremony for the Middle School Science Fair - a program of the CREST-Jane Goodall Science Symposium! Tonight, we celebrate curiosity, creativity, and all the incredible work our students have put into their projects. On Monday your students spent several hours being interviewed by professional scientists and engineering from our community and WOW the positive feedback that I got about their work was over the top! Students - you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished over the last 6 months - give yourselves a round of applause!

The science fair program is a team-effort, so I’d like to issue a few thank yous! First, a huge thank you to our science teachers for guiding and inspiring these young scientists. Your dedication makes all the difference and we truly have the greatest science teachers around - give them a round of applause.

Secondly, I want to thank the fair staff - science fair coordinator Tiffini Stephens and especially Judge Coordinator, Gina Vadnais, who made it possible for all those judges to spend the day with us. Thank you!

We also want to recognize the families and friends who have supported these students—whether it was helping with research, cheering them on, or pretending to be test subjects!

And of course, I can’t say it enough, the biggest congratulations go to our students. Your hard work, problem-solving, and innovative thinking are what bring science to life. No matter the results tonight, you have all achieved something incredible.

Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge

These projects are invited to submit their projects to the Thermo Fishers Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge! The JIC, previously known as the Broadcom MASTERS, is the nation’s premier STEM research competition for middle school students. Nominees are chosen among the top 10% of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade competitors at a Society-affiliated science and engineering fair. All nominees who submit an application will receive a T-shirt and other prizes, including a special edition booklet of Invention and Innovation articles from Science News Learning, courtesy of The Lemelson Foundation. Entrants join the Society alumni network and are officially Thermo Fisher JIC alumni! Entries are judged during the summer and 300 top projects will be announced on September 2024. From these Top 300 students, 30 finalists and one parent/guardian will win an all-expense-paid trip to the national finals week in Washington, DC to showcase their projects, compete in teams and visit sites that celebrate innovation through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
