Opintojen kieli / The Language of Studies

10 of 22

Language skills of students

  • Opinions mainly from Finnish speaking students
  • English skills are either native, fully professionally proficient or working proficient for 96% of the interviewees

11 of 22

Language policies

  • Students value the quality of education over language (second histogram from left)
  • Students think that the university should maintain the quality of Finnish vocabulary (4th from left)
  • No evidence of unite opinions in other questions

12 of 22

Findings

  • Many would rather study in their native language, even if it wouldn’t fit in their schedule as well
  • For others the quality of the teaching is more important than its language, even though the upkeep of Finnish and Swedish vocabulary is still important
  • The choice of language doesn’t feel justifiable for the students in many courses, say a Finnish professors lectures to Finnish audience in English
  • Exercise groups could be formed in all languages if the course is lectured in English

Findings

  • Benefit varies a lot
  • Responsible use should be encouraged just like other sources
  • A complete ban would not be sensible, there are other means to cheat
  • In general, the answers show that students perceive artificial intelligence primarily as a tool and not as a comprehensive solution - it can be used, for example, to handle routine tasks, as a starting point for an answer and to create new perspectives

Overall reflection of my studies

Findings

  • The barrier to asking questions in English is higher for many students
  • A portion leave questions unasked because of language
  • Students happily fill course feedback, but rarely get to know how their feedback has been taken into account
  • Yet many hope, that there would some kind of counter feedback: that would motivate to answer to the course feedback form and would increase the amount of believe that the feedback has been actually heard
