Mattawan Consolidated School District’s
MACUL 2015 Quickfire Share Out!
How to Participate!
In the spirit of collaboration, and sharing with all of our colleagues that weren’t able to attend, I want to share your BEST takeaways from MACUL 2015 with the rest of the district! Here’s how you get to help make that happen!
That’s it! It’s a quickfire challenge, so the entire thing shouldn’t take too long, and by the end of it we’ll have a fantastic resource to share with the district.
Ready? Set? Go!

I was able to collect a heap of great resources about student data and information privacy during a fantastic panel session! A lot of schools are thinking about what we’re giving up to companies.

I attended Rushton Hurley’s session on creating projects students won’t forget. I learned about a website called Epals that you can connect with other classrooms around the world.

I set up a back chat and now I use it as a warm up in my writing class. Lots of options for back chatting come up when you Google it. It is a great way to get a class started. In case you don’t know, back chat is a way of sharing quick thoughts on a topic with a large group of people.

I attended a few sessions about Google Classroom to find out about features I might not be aware of. In one session the presenter had a great presentation and gave us permission to share it with others. Here is the link to the presentation for anyone who would like a step by step explanation on setting up their Google Classroom.

I visited the Meemic Insurance exhibit and learned that any employee of a K-12 school, as well as college, can apply for a Meemic Foundation grant. You can view the grant opportunities and apply for a grant at: MeemicFoundation.com

One thing I learned is that our Professional Development sessions should be more about many voices than one being shared. Then, we take what is shared collectively, capture it, and email it out the next day to be put into action.

I learned about using QR codes to access my listening center. I’m still having trouble with it, however, and would like some help with it.
I also learned about classroom Facebook pages and am now implementing this new communication tool!

I learned about “20% Time” -- modeled after
Google’s company philosophy. Kids work one day per week on a self-driven goal or project, facilitated by the teacher and a mentor. Students blog about what they’re learning and write & present “TED” talks at the end of the year.

I went to several sessions on Google Classroom. I came away super excited about the impact this could have on me as a teacher as well as my students; save paper, save trees, save money, less load to carry back and forth, student work always with me on any device. Being an early childhood educator, I won’t be able to go completely paperless, but it’s a nice start. Here are two Google Classroom activities I was able to do my first week back after the conference.

I went to several good sessions. The two that I found most beneficial was Google classroom and Aurasma. I use Classroom as way to communicate homework assignment/resources to parents. Students also use it during Daily 3 and Daily 5.
I am trying to use Aurasma with book talks, but am having trouble.

WOW what a great resource! It’s like IXL math, RAZ kids, word work, number sense, writer’s workshop all in ONE place!
This is web based but when made into a web clip - can also be accessed on iPads. Looking forward to using this website- and the majority of it is FREE!
