WHAT SHOULD CVBB DO?

  • Raise money to support the expansion of the Castle View Band program.
  • Help with logistics when necessary.
  • This does require some vision and drive that is outside the actual band program.
  • We still need parents to just help out with certain jobs with or without a booster club.

BE PART OF WHAT WE’RE DOING

  • Get involved!
  • Parents can help with fundraising
  • Parents can help move equipment
  • Parents can build
  • Parents can attend contests and cheer on the band
  • Parents can bring patrons who can help support us financially
  • Parents can come to meetings and lend their experience to improving the functionality and success of the band program.

FEES

  • Percussion $60 instrument usage fee
    • Students NOT enrolled in Percussion Tech will have this assessed as a fine, students in percussion tech are assessed as a class fee automatically.
  • School instrument rental - $50 per semester - can be waived because of need
  • Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Uniforms – Tux purchase (Als’ Formal Wear approx $115); we will measure in class and order new dresses [around $65] or you can purchased used from a graduate) I’ll be emailing instructions on measurements in October.
  • Marching Band Fees $650– This will all be entered into MySchoolBucks. The fee is in place to accommodate the needs of the program. Colorado Give Day fundraiser is under way. All funds from this fundraiser will used for paying Marching Band Fees for the students credited for the funds raised. CVBB fee is $35 and covers ALL Meals for the marching season – Checks to CVBB. Non-marchers should only pay $10 to CVBB.
  • Jazz Band –Individual purchases – Potential Costs for Jazz Festival

WHY FEES?

  • Busing to contests – ($10,000)
    • Depending on the time and distance, buses cost the program between $400-$1000. Since the marching band uses two buses that doubles, when both bands go to contest it doubles. When bus drivers are unavailable, we are forced to use charters which costs even more.
  • Staffing - ($17,000)
  • Music - $3800 (+$1600 for rights to arrange)– BOA Bands pay $4500-$6000 for their shows
  • Drill Design - $0 – Most bands in Colorado by $1500-$6000, BOA bands can pay upwards of $10,000
  • Show Design Materials – Flags $1000+, new vinyl $1200+, Media carts $2700 (boosters)
  • ($30,300) – 80 students @ $400 = 32,000 – 77 in marching this year = $30,800

THE HANDLING OF FEES

  • Procedure for assessing fees - Any fees not paid are turned into the bookkeeper. The only way for the bookkeeper can add fees is as “fines”. Please do not see this as punitive.
    • I will make you aware of fees, give a couple of weeks to pay, then send lists to the bookkeeper to add to Infinite Campus.
  • Bookkeeping request from parents
    • Pay your fees at your earliest convenience
    • If you can’t afford to pay your balance, please make payments towards progress
    • Castle View is NOT a credit organization
    • We do want to work with parents and students, but you wouldn’t go without paying your water bill…

19 of 29

WHAT TO TALK ABOUT?

  • Your stories are the best stories! Tell them.

20 of 29

WHY MUSIC???

  • More specifically, why play a musical instrument?

  • The value of playing an instrument is probably obvious to you. However, convincing you of it’s importance is not the point. The point is: Can you convince someone else?

21 of 29

WHY MUSIC???

  • Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons.
  • Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education.
  • Secondary students who participated in a music group at school reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (tobacco, alcohol, and drugs).
  • Schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2% graduation rate and 93.9% attendance rate compared to schools without music education, which average 72.9% graduation and 84.9% attendance.

22 of 29

WHY MUSIC???

  • Regardless of socioeconomic status or school district, students (3rd graders) who participate in high-quality music programs score higher on reading and spelling tests.
  • A Stanford study shows that music engages areas of the brain which are involved with paying attention, making predictions and updating events in our memory.
  • Children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to those who do not receive musical training.
  • Schools that have music programs have an attendance rate of 93.3% compared to 84.9% in schools without music programs.
