WHY SHOULD EVERYONE APPLY TO FAFSA

  • The application is free and is the GATEWAY to many financial possibilities to pay for college
  • Completing and submitting FAFSA enables families to see if they qualify for billions of dollars available in the form of grants, work study funds, and loans
  • This is federal money, but many states and colleges use the FAFSA to determine a student’s eligibility for state and school aid. Additionally, private financial aid providers may use FAFSA info to determine aid qualifications.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES MY FAFSA TELL COLLEGES/INSTITUTIONS?

  • FAFSA determines your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution)
  • Your EFC leads to awards from the institutions themselves—really important so you can be included for any sort of university/college/institutional aid
  • Consider using the Federal Student Aid Estimator on www.studentaid.gov, which asks questions about family finances and condition
    • questions are gear toward students, but require filling in parents 'adjusted gross income and other financial details
    • Provides estimates only

WHEN

  • FAFSA is available by Oct 1, 2022 (used to be Jan 1 of each year)
  • Can receive FAFSA response/results within 3-5 days (advantage for those applying early, ie ED deadlines November
  • Studentaid.gov

NOT SURE OF YOUR PLANS YET?

  • Not planning on attending a 4-year institution?
  • It is a common myth that only 4-year university-bound students need to fill out the FAFSA. The FAFSA can pay for many trade school programs as well as apprenticeships and community college.
  • Still unsure of what you want to do after graduation? You should fill out the FAFSA anyway to keep options open.

  • Create FSA ID- your user name and password which allows you to access and sign your FAFSA and loan documents
  • List of schools you are considering (even if you are uncertain or have no idea about plans)—you can add up to 10 on FAFSA
