Risk of myocarditis after COVID vaccination

  • Rates of myocarditis after vaccination in children 5-11 yo is unknown
  • No cases in clinical trials (3,082 children with at least 7 days followup)
  • Risk of myocarditis 16-18x higher in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection than non-infected individuals
  • Risk of myocarditis in individuals post-SARS-CoV-2 infection 6-34x higher compared to those who received mRNA vaccine

  • Myocarditis in 5-11 yo likely less than 12-15 yo
    • Viral myocarditis baseline rates substantially lower in 5-11 yo than older children
    • Dose of vaccine in 5-11 yo (10 μg) is one-third the dose used in >12 yo (30 μg)
