What is ChatGPT?

NOTE:

Canva (personal accounts) and TinyWow, Perplexity AI also have AI writing capabilities.

Time it took to reach 1 million users:

Netflix - 3.5 years

Facebook - 10 months

Spotify - 5 months

Teachers

  • Create Rubrics
  • Generate vocabulary
  • Create assessments, quizzes, exit tickets etc
  • Differentiate content, such as varied reading level of the same passage

  • Give feedback on student work
  • Write emails (parents, students, staff)
  • Generate lesson plans (solid backbone for you to build off of)
  • Translate into or write in another language
  • Create warm-ups or entry tasks
  • Create letters of recommendation
  • Generate questions to a passage, concept, book etc
  • Bulleted lists of information
  • It can create ineffective pieces of writing for students to practice their revision skills. (No longer need to use a real student’s writing.)

What can AI help you do?

Plus so much more!!

When asked to write mean or hateful content, this is ChatGPT’s response:

I'm sorry, but I am not able to fulfill that request as it goes against my programming to generate content that promotes or glorifies hate speech, harassment, or bullying in any form. It's important to communicate clearly and effectively, but it's also important to do so in a respectful and professional manner.

ChatGPT can be used to assist students in a variety of ways, including:

  1. Tutoring: ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a dataset of educational content and can be used to provide students with explanations, examples, and practice problems to help them better understand the material.
  2. Question answering: As I mentioned earlier, ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a dataset of questions and answers, and can be used to provide students with quick and accurate answers to their questions.
  3. Writing Assistance: ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a dataset of writing prompts and used to generate written responses, which can help students improve their writing skills and prepare for writing assignments.
  4. Language learning: ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a dataset of language-related text, and can be used to help students learn a new language by generating translations, grammar explanations, and practice sentences.
  5. Study assistance: ChatGPT can generate flashcards, summaries, or even practice quizzes for a particular subject which will make the revision more productive for students

Students

  • Tutoring
  • Feedback
  • Writing assistance
  • Practice Skills
  • Simplify content
  • Explain content, feedback, incorrect answers etc.

  • Language learning
  • Translation
  • Answering questions
  • Exploring new interests (Choice)
  • Practice written conversation
  • Develop questioning skills
  • Critical Thinking (Is this data true?)
  • Study help (generate flashcards, summaries, practice quizzes)

Limitations

ChatGPT is not a search engine, therefore it does not have the ability to search the internet for information. Rather, it uses the information it learned from training data to generate responses. (Data through 2021) This leaves room for error — so all output should be fact-checked for accuracy and timeliness.

The chatbot may not be able to provide in-depth information or understand context or nuances in conversation.

As with all AI tools, all business leaders should be aware of the dangers of potential bias. If the data ChatGPT is trained on is biased, the answers the bot provides will be biased, as well. All companies need to be vigilant about monitoring output from the chatbot to ensure it is free of bias and offensive content.

Example of ChatGPT Capabilities

The next slide shows the progression to get a rubric created in the format I was looking for. You can see the progression of my questions.

This took some thought and problem solving to get my questions right in order to get the product I was looking for.

It's important to note that while ChatGPT can be a helpful tool, it should NEVER be used in place of teacher instruction and guidance, and it is important to supervise the usage to ensure that the answers provided are appropriate and factually correct.

Benefits of ChatGPT in Education

Explanation

High School Examples

Elementary Examples

Personalized learning

ChatGPT can provide individualized responses to student questions, allowing them to receive personalized instruction and feedback. This can help ensure that each student's needs are being met and that they are able to progress at their own pace.

  • A student can get help on a math problem they're stuck on, with step by step solution or explain different methods.
  • A student can also use ChatGPT to get feedback on their work.
  • A student learning to read can practice vocabulary, grammar, adjust the level of the text.
  • Practice basic arithmetic and receive explanations and examples of the concepts they are learning.

24/7 availability

ChatGPT is available 24/7, which makes it an ideal tool for providing support to students outside of class time. This can be particularly beneficial for students with busy schedules, who may have difficulty finding time to meet with teachers during the school day.

  • A student who has a busy schedule, can use ChatGPT at night to finish their homework and ask any questions they have.
  • ChatGPT can provide feedback on a student’s work.
  • A student who is confused can ask ChatGPT to explain a concept.
  • A student who finish their work early can use ChatGPT to explore and learn new subjects they are interested in.

Improved language skills

By providing explanations and examples in a natural, conversational manner, ChatGPT can help students improve their language skills. This can be beneficial for English language learners, as well as for students who are working to improve their writing, reading, and speaking skills.

  • A student learning English as a second language can use ChatGPT to practice conversation and grammar.
  • A student working on improving their writing skills can use ChatGPT to receive feedback on sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary.
  • A student learning to spell can practice spelling words and receive feedback on their accuracy.
  • A student learning to write sentences can practice writing and receive feedback on grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Implications for EDUCATION

  • Tech is constantly changing! Once again we need to rethink how we teach.
    • What skills and knowledge do our students need to learn?
    • Continued focus on problem solving and critical thinking skills.
    • Hone skills such as developing high quality questions, adding in voice and tone to writing.
  • AI can increase your production as a teacher, saving you precious time.
    • Creating the backbone of rubrics, assessments, emails, etc gives you a jumpstart in the creation of your content.
