A Trip to Greenfield Village

Have you ever been to Greenfield Village? It’s a museum town at the Henry Ford, with pieces of history behind every door.

 

Walking through the front gate is like entering the past. There are historic buildings and roads and an old steam train…that’s not fast.

What should we do first? It’s time to explore.

Let’s enter the Printing Office. This is the place where newspapers and books were created by using a revolutionary invention called the Gutenberg printing press. A printing press is a large mechanical device that uses ink, hot metal movable pieces of letter type, and applied pressure to create a written document. The printing press was an important invention because it enabled mass production and distribution of written materials.

Another business in town is the Cohen Millinery Shop. What’s a millinery shop you ask? It a store where people could buy fashionable women’s hats, which often had colorful fabrics, ribbons, feathers and flowers on them.

What should we do next?

One of my favorite things to do is to take a ride in an authentic Ford Model T car. The 1914 Model T car was built on the first assembly line conceived by the Ford Motor Company right here in Michigan.

Look, we just drove past the Wright Cycle Company! You probably know that the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, are legendary for taking the first airplane flight. But, before they became famous aviators, they owned a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio where they built, repaired, and sold bicycles.

Our final destination should be Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory. It is one of the most amazing exhibits at the museum because it is a reproduction of the lab where Thomas Edison created of hundreds of inventions including electricity and the light bulb! Such a an incredible legacy!

These are just a few of the amazing exhibits at Greenfield Village. You can visit it many times and always learn something new!
