Reflection

In this topic we learned about atomic structure and how to write an isotope formula. We also learned about electron configuration and Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES). Specifically, we able to identify any element on the periodic table and state exactly where you were most likely to find every electron in it. Content I found interesting was that airports can use PES to identify if someone has recently been using dangerous chemicals, or if they have them in their bags. Content I found challenging was identifying elements when they had electrons in the d block of the periodic table. Questions I still have include: how do elements bond with each other?

Reflection

In this topic we learned about moles. We learned how to convert grams to moles and moles to grams. Specifically, we learned about molar proportions and hydrates. Content I found interesting was learning about heating to constant mass. Content I found challenging was finding the hydrate formulas because I always got confused on which number was the water and which one was the other compound. Questions I still have include can one invent elements or does the bonding of elements prevent that?

Reflection

In this topic we learned about types of chemical bonding. We learned about the differences between covalent and ionic bonds. Specifically, we learned about lewis structures and how we can use. Content I found interesting was connecting Mean Girls to bonding. It definitely helped me to understand the concept. Content I found challenging was the Polyatomic Ionic bonding. I still don’t really understand why they exist and what they mean.

In this topic we learned about molecular geometry. Specifically, we learned about how to draw the different shapes and their names. Content I found interesting was learning about organic chemistry. I really liked puzzling out what was hiding in the skeletal shape. Content I found challenging was seeing the shape of a compound just by looking at it when it isn’t drawn in that way. Questions I still have include why are the compounds in organic chemistry drawn differently.

Content I found interesting was to learn about how different substances interact. Content I found challenging was finding the molarity.
